Newcastle United will meet to consider an appeal against the red card shown to Anthony Gordon in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday. The England international is currently ruled out of upcoming Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Brentford.

Perhaps more urgently for the Magpies, he will also be suspended for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium later this month. Eddie Howe’s side travel to the London Stadium next Monday and then host Brentford at the start of April, after the cup final.Brentford: Premier League 2023/24 fixtures and schedule | Football News | Sky Sports

Gordon was given his marching orders against the Seagulls after shoving Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. That dismissal for violent conduct comes with a three-match ban but Howe admitted that the Tyneside club will meet to talk about the incident and may challenge that. His side went on to lose that fifth round cup meeting against Brighton on penalties.

He said: “Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation. I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it. But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”
