Hull City head coach Ruben Selles gives transfer window verdict and reveals what is hindering Championship survival bid at home
Hull City boss Ruben Selles blocked 21-year-old’s exit amid Plymouth Argyle interest
Hull City boss Ruben Selles didn’t want Mason Burstow to join relegation rivals Plymouth Argyle.
Hull City’s striker was wanted by Plymouth Argyle and some other unnamed Football League clubs on the final day of the January transfer window, as per Mike White on X. However, a move to Home Park didn’t materialise in the end.
Burstow, 21, ended up staying put at the MKM Stadium on Monday beyond the deadline. He will now see out the rest of the season in East Yorkshire.
The Tigers’ boss Ruben Selles has said, as per BBC Humberside’s James Hoggarth on X: “The only thing that I can say is I told the club I don’t want a player going to a direct club in The Championship right now.”
Hull City are currently sat 21st in the table and are two points above the drop zone after their 2-1 loss to Stoke City.
Hull City update regarding Mason Burstow
Burstow gives Hull City more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch.
He has made 21 appearances in all competitions so far this season and has scored two goals.
Plymouth Argyle could have seen Burstow as someone to strengthen their attacking department.
His chances of regular game time at Hull City over the coming months may be limited due to the arrivals of the likes of Kyle Joseph, Joe Gelhardt, Louie Barry and Lincoln.
However, it would have been a risk to let him join a team they are battling relegation against.
The Tigers snapped up the former England youth international in August last year and he penned a four-year deal.
At the time, he told their website: “It’s a big accomplishment for myself. I’m really excited to be here. There’s a real homely feel about the club, with big aspirations, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
“There’s a real project here. The new manager has got a way of playing that is really bright, really attacking and positive.
“I play through the middle and always try to be a threat in the box. I can link play, hold it up and run in behind. Hopefully, there are different avenues the manager can use me.”
Burstow has also played for Charlton Athletic, Chelsea and Sunderland in the past.
What now for Mason Burstow?
He is stuck at Hull City until the summer and it remains to be seen whether Plymouth Argyle
will reignite their pursuit of him then.
The Tigers are back in action next Wednesday with an away trip to Burnley.
