Jose Cordoba suffers Championship humiliation after snubbing Rangers in favour of Norwich City

Rangers’ ill-fated pursuit of Jose Cordoba was well documented after the Panamanian defender snubbed a move to Glasgow for Norwich City.

Plying his trade with Levski Sofia in Bulgaria last summer, a switch to Rangers looked all set to be completed before Rangers pulled the plug on the Cordoba deal after the centre-back hesitated.

Norwich City entered the Cordoba race late on and the lure of English football proved too strong and Rangers would up moving for Robin Propper.

But things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Jose Cordoba since making the switch to the English Championship.

Jose Cordoba named in worst performing Championship XI

Norwich City are English football’s perennial yo-yo club but this season they find themselves in the bottom half of the table.

Cordoba – who has played 30 Championship games this season – has been central to that disappointment as the Canaries go through a transitional campaign.

That’s played out in the stats too, with Cordoba being named as a centre-back in the Second Tier podcast’s worst performing Championship XI of the season.

Partnering Stoke City centre-back Michael Rose, Cordoba is technically the division’s second-lowest rated regular defender according to WhoScored.

For players who have played at least 1200 minutes, Cordoba’s rating of 6.42 is marginally better than Rose’s abysmal 6.35.

Rangers didn’t feel enough ‘passion’ in Jose Cordoba talks

Jose Cordoba claims he chose to join Norwich City because his ‘dream’ was the play in the Premier League but that seems pretty far off as things stand.

Cordoba also revealed talks with his mum turned him off the move to Rangers as he set his sights on rubbing shoulders with England’s elite.

“It was because my dream is to play in the Premier League,” Cordoba said in October 2024 when directly asked about turning down Rangers for Norwich City.

“Second, because I first think about my family and then me, so I spoke with my mum and my wife and the decision was quick.

“I’m the boss but what I do always is I ask (my mum) and the people around me and then I make my own decision, always.”

Nils Koppen claims Rangers weren’t waiting on Cordoba either after doing a lot of work to try and bring the centre-back to Glasgow.

Speaking about the transfer in October 2024, Koppen claims he never felt the passion from the Panamanian and the club pulled the plug before he gave Rangers the cold shoulder.

“A lot of work had been done and we got to a point where everything was agreed,” said Koppen.

“The player was here in Glasgow and attended a game but we didn’t really feel that passion to come and play for Rangers.

“While there was an agreement in place, we decided that we can’t have a player at Rangers who has already started to doubt if this is the best place for him before he’s played a minute of football.

“It’s unfortunate because of how much work goes into the process but at the end of the day, you need to ask are we comfortable with the situation?”

‘That’s not Rangers’ – Peter Lovenkrands slaughters Ibrox squad and brands them ‘not good enough’

Peter Lovenkrands knows what it takes to hoist silverware above your head in the famous blue of Rangers Football Club.

Lovenkrands joined Rangers as a fresh-faced 20-year-old almost 25 years ago and went on to leave a huge impact on the club over six seasons.

It was another Great Dane in Brian Laudrup who recommended Lovenkrands to Rangers and the impact the club also had on the forward can be heard all the way down to the 45-year-old’s accent.

Having returned to the Rangers academy in a coaching capacity in recent seasons, the former Ibrox winger continues to tune in and has been aghast at the club’s form.

Now Peter Lovenkrands has gutted the misfiring Rangers squad and told them that they are ‘not good enough’ to wear the jersey.
