Interim manager lands new job after Coventry City exit

The latest Coventry City news from CoventryLive as this former coach is back on familiar territory

Rhys Carr is back in the EFL five months after leaving Coventry City.

The 38-year-old quit the CBS Arena in January, just seven months after being part of the coaching reshuffle that saw Aid Viveash leave the club.

t was that coaching change, overseen by Mark Robins, that has been cited by Doug King as one of the reasons behind the Sky Blues’ early season struggles, with Robins losing his job in November.

Carr and George Boateng formed the new coaching staff as City struggled before Frank Lampard came in. Carr remained under Lampard for a short period before his exit was announced in the New Year.

The Welshman is now back with Bristol Rovers, who were relegated to League Two last season, and with Jon Stead he has been named assistant head coach to Darrell Clarke.

This represents a return to the Memorial Stadium for Carr, who has previously worked at both Rovers and Bristol City. He was lead professional development phase coach at the Gas for six months in 2022 and spent six years with the Robins between 2013 and 2019, mainly as a first-team development coach.

He has also held roles at the likes of Wolves, Sheffield United, Swansea City, Cardiff City and with the Republic of Ireland Women. Indeed, he arrived at Coventry after two years as elite player development coach for Wolves. He also took over as interim boss for three games between the sacking of Robins on November 7 and Lampard’s appointment

Speaking of the appointments, Rovers’ director of football Ricky Martin said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jon and Rhys to the club, with both arriving with a vast amount of high-level coaching experience within the industry.

“Work at the training ground has not stopped since the end of the season, with everyone working tirelessly to ensure the club starts pre-season positively. The appointment of two assistant coaches of such quality is another step in this process.”

BristolLive understands that coaches Dave Horseman and Kevin Bond have both left the club over the summer.
