Nathan Jones’ panic signing finally set to leave Southampton this summer
Paul Onuachu was a panic signing from Nathan Jones in the January 2023 transfer window. Now, he could finally leave Southampton, after a rocky career.
The last few seasons have been a tough period to support Southampton. The club is in the peak of its “yo-yo club” tenure, since they are constantly up and down between England’s two highest divisions.
Too good for the Championship, too bad for the Premier League, it is difficult for Southampton to foster a pull factor for big players. It is also impossible to forge a long-term plan, with players constantly switching and revenue far from promised.
Nathan Jones’ panic signing set to leave Southampton this summer
Nevertheless, there is one player who has stuck by Southampton, despite multiple opportunities to leave. That is Paul Onuachu, who was signed by Nathan Jones at the turn of 2023, and has remained ever since.
Of course, the Nigerian striker who is adoringly dubbed Tall Paul has been sent out on loan during his time at Southampton. He then had the opportunity to leave in the January transfer window after no promise of game time, but stayed and fought for his place under Ivan Juric.
The less said about Juric the better, but lo and behold, Onuachu hasn’t made himself an irreplaceable piece of the Southampton puzzle. And now, The Mirror believes that Onuachu will be one of the players set to leave this summer, with the Saints hopeful to pick up as much money from sales as possible.
Onuachu is, frankly, one of those players who is too good for the Championship. Unlike Southampton, though, he has the power to immediately change his scenery, and it’s not like Southampton will try and prevent him.
Look, the right decision was made to keep Onuachu throughout the January transfer window. While the Saints will lose a bit of money on his value, he could have been the man to save the Saints from relegation. Ultimately, nobody did, but you can’t fault the optimism.
Fabrizio Romano reveals £6m clause that could cost Southampton key defender
Trusted transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed a £6m release clause active in Jan Bednarek’s contract. Clubs are on alert to pounce on the key Southampton defender.
Southampton know they will lose players in the summer transfer window. Unfortunately, this is just part and parcel of being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship. It’s not like the Saints can mope about it, considering it was their own doing in the first place.
Nevertheless, fans have every right to mope. Fans are not responsible for Southampton being relegated; the club and players are. Unfortunately, there’s been some further poor news for fans to digest.
Fabrizio Romano says Jan Bednarek could leave Southampton for £6m
The trusted journalist and dubbed transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has recently confirmed that Jan Bednarek has a transfer release clause active in his Southampton contract. Ever since the Saints were relegated, Bednarek is available for a measly £6m fee.
Unsurprisingly, Romano goes on to say that several clubs have become attentive to this opportunity. As a matter of fact (disguised as opinion), clubs would be stupid not to pounce on this opportunity. Bednarek would be worth even double the price he’s set, perhaps even triple.
Another noteworthy point is that Bednarek is currently the third-highest-paid player at Southampton, so this salary might need to be matched, depending on where Bednarek and his agent stand.
Jan Bednarek is proven at every level. He is one of those players to have seen Southampton being dragged through the mud, but always gave his all to the shirt and never dropped his head. Boasting leadership qualities and a fine defensive record, it’s hard to say he doesn’t deserve a move.
That’s not to say that it won’t raise a lump in any Saints fan’s throat to see him don anything than the colours red and white. Heck, even for his national team, he wears those colours, so it’ll be a bizarre change
