Nottingham Forest have released a statement confirming their decision to sack Nuno Espirito Santo after he delivered their best season in 30 years.
The 51-year-old Portuguese manager left the Premier League side late on Monday night (September 8) after weeks of speculation about his future, following tensions between him and the club’s co-owner Evangelos Marinakis. The moves comes despite Forest finishing seventh last term and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals, qualifying for Europe in their best campaign since 1995, after being close to relegation the previous season.
And now the East Midlands club have released a statement announcing his departure. Nottingham Forest said: ” Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that, following recent circumstances, Nuno Espirito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as head coach.

“The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at The City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024/25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club.
“As someone who played a pivotal role in our success last season, he will always hold a special place in our journey.”

Fired up the table by the 20 goals of star striker Chris Wood, Forest had pushed for Champions League qualification last season, only for their performances to dip in the final stages of the season, meaning they had to settle for a place in the Europa League instead. They began this campaign with a 3-1 win over Brentford at home, before the 1-1 draw at Palace and a shock 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham when they were last in action.

Nuno Espirito Santo cast serious doubt over his own future at Forest a fortnight ago by confessing: “There is no smoke without fire.” The head coach, who previously declared his squad required bolstering in all but one position, revealed his relationship with Greek businessman Marinakis had deteriorated and they were no longer in regular contact, after reports emerged that Forest were considering sacking him just days into the new Premier League season.
He penned a fresh three-year contract in June after steering Forest into Europe for the first time in three decades. But in an extraordinary press conference ahead of their 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, he revealed: “Look, I always had a very good relationship with the owner, last season was very, very, very close, almost daily basis.
“This season, not so well, but I always believe that dialogue and what you what you say or your opinion, is always valid, because my concern is the squad and the season that we have ahead of us, but our relationship has changed.”
