Wrexham will need to be much improved when they return to League One action on Friday afternoon.

The Welsh outfit have seen their six-point lead over Wycombe Wanderers reduced to just one in the space of a week.

Wycombe won their game in hand against Huddersfield Town before then beating Stevenage 1-0 on April 12.

As for Wrexham, they had a full week to rest after beating Burton Albion last weekend but couldn’t get the job done against Wigan Athletic.

The Red Dragons didn’t have a single shot on goal across the 90 minutes, seeing them draw 0-0 with Wigan Athletic and open the door for the Chairboys to get firmly back into the race for second.

Wrexham are still favourites to win promotion ahead of Wycombe following the draw, but it does feel like two points were dropped rather than one gained.

However, with four games to go and the Red Dragons, on paper, having an easier run-in, there is still plenty of optimism around the club.

On this front, Wrexham legend Andy Morrell took to social media post-Wigan to issue a rousing message to fans.

However, he also conceded that Phil Parkinson’s side did not deserve the three points on Saturday.

He wrote: “Frustrating game as we really never got going and didn’t deserve 3 pts! Difficult to pick MOM. However a point closer and still in our hands. Let’s take the roof off at home on Friday! It’s still on!”

Wrexham fixtures compared to Wycombe

Wrexham return to League One action at 3pm UK time on Friday, facing 21st-place Bristol Rovers.

This is followed by a clash with 10th-place Blackpool on Monday before their toughest remaining game of 2024/25 against Charlton Athletic on April 26.

Wrexham’s normal 2024/25 season then comes to an end on May 3 away to Lincoln City.

As for Wycombe, all of their remaining matches this term come against sides currently in the top eight.

They face Bolton Wanderers on Friday before ties with Charlton, Leyton Orient, and Stockport County.

Wycombe Wanderers boss issues clear League One promotion message as gap closed on Wrexham

Wrexham saw their chances of securing promotion to the Championship automatically dealt a big blow on Saturday.

How things can change in the space of just seven days. After beating Burton Albion last time out, Wrexham had moved six points clear of third-place Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys looked to be faltering, and a second-place finish for the Red Dragons seemed to be nailed on.

However, Wycombe beat Huddersfield Town in their game in hand earlier this week before seeing off Stevenage by one goal to nil on Saturday.

At the same time, Wrexham drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic, meaning there is now just one point seperating the two sides.

With four games of the season to play, the battle for second is expected to go down to the wire, and Wycombe boss Mikde Dodds has spoken out.

Wycombe Wanderers boss on promotion race after closing gap on Wrexham

Robbie Savage backs Wrexham to get promoted despite their blip on April 12, which saw them fail to have a single shot on goal.

On paper, Wycombe have a tougher ended to the campaign but with a better goal difference and just one point in it, anything could happen.

Now, as per Bucks Free Press, manager Dodds has commented on the promption battle, inisting that his team are still in it.

He said: “I thought the results against Shrewsbury and Reading were harsh as we had decisions go against us, so we deserved that today for those two games.

“From my point of view, after Reading, everyone thought that was it as Wycombe were wobbling but we’ve shown in the last two games we are capable of big performances and we’re still in it.

“We created chances and at this stage of the season, the first goal is vital and the longer it was 0-0, they made it hard for us.”

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham promotion chances

Despite dropping two points, Wrexham are predicted to finish second in League One come May.

However, Opta’s supercomputer suggests that their chances of doing so have decreased a great deal following the 0-0 draw with Wigan.

After what was an underwhelming display, Phil Parkinson commented on Wrexham’s promotion chances, insisting they are still in a great position.

He told BBC Sport: “We’ve had a moment where the referee will look at the penalty decision and realise it was pretty harsh not to get that because the lad’s (Luke Robinson) got his arm in an unnatural position.

“All in all, we’ll take the point today, we’d love to have been sat here with three.

“With four games to go, to still be a point clear in second is a great position to be in.”
