Three mistakes Wrexham must avoid in the summer transfer window including Paul Mullin saga and £50k-a-week gamble

Wrexham’s summer transfer window is crucial: get things right and they could challenge for promotion to the Premier League, but get things wrong and they could plummet back down to League One.

Wrexham have been promoted to the Championship ahead of the 2025/26 season. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s unthinkable journey at the club continues with a third-straight promotion, and now a shot at the Premier League.

Phil Parkinson won’t go crazy this summer, though. Already, Parkinson has said Wrexham won’t sign any superstars, but he could yet go back on his word with Wrexham rumoured to be interested in Christian Eriksen following his release at Manchester United.

With a lot going on already at the Racecourse, we look at three mistakes Wrexham could make this summer, but that they have to avoid making at all costs…

Wrexham can’t sign over-paid players for the sake of it

There’s a lot of rumours flying around about how much money the Dragons have for this summer’s transfer business. Reports have stated that Wrexham have a £25million transfer budget and that they’re ready to compete with the top clubs in terms of wages.

Earlier in the summer though, it was claimed that Wrexham have offered Tom Cairney a contract worth £50,000-a-week. It’s now understood that Cairney wants to stay at Fulham where he’s in talks over a new deal.

Whilst statement signings would be exciting, Parkinson needs to be realistic. He and the club can’t go spending big money on big names who will last a season or two at most. There needs to be some investing in younger players as well as players with that all-important experience.

Wrexham must handle the Paul Mullin situation with care

Paul Mullin has been in headlines of late. Mullin spoke about his Wrexham exile and he says he doesn’t know why Parkinson lost trust in his goal-scoring ability.

Parkinson has also spoken on the matter, simply reiterating the point that Mullin fell out of favour at Wrexham after the January signings of strikers Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith.

Wrexham fans will always love Mullin and Parkinson must treat this situation with care, whether Mullin stays or not. If Mullin leaves in a poor manner then it won’t look good for Wrexham, and it could make potential new signings think twice before potentially moving to the Racecourse.

Quality over quantity for Wrexham in the transfer market

Already we have a long list of players linked with Wrexham this summer. It could prove to be summer where we have double figures in terms of signings, but Parkinson needs to manage those signings.

There needs to be a level of quality to the signings. Whilst Parkinson needs squad depth, he needs to be careful about signing players for the sake of it. We could quickly see Wrexham focus on quantity over quality in the transfer market.

A big squad won’t keep Wrexham in the Championship next season, but a good squad will.
