Wrexham now want to sign ‘outstanding’ Championship striker, he could help the Dragons sign another player too
Wrexham have another new name on their transfer radar for this summer, and it’s someone who was bang in form in the Championship last season.
Wrexham want to sign Championship-quality players this summer, which is certainly understandable given how Phil Parkinson’s side currently lack it.
Following their historic third-straight promotion under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham will be right up against it in the Championship next season, where the money and the quality really starts to show.
Already this summer, Wrexham have signed two new players in Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward: the latter having been announced as the club’s latest signing, joining on a free transfer after being released by Leicester City.
There remains a number of positions that Parkinson will surely be keen to bolster this summer. In particular, more central midfielders look vitally important for the Dragons, along with some new centre-backs and perhaps one or two more strikers.
Now, there’s a new striker on their summer transfer radar in Josh Windass.
Wrexham linked with move for Josh Windass
Sheffield Wednesday are in a mess. Players have gone months without pay and there’s now incredible uncertainty over the club’s short and long-term future, leaving the current crop of players in limbo. Josh Windass is among those who’ve reportedly handed in their notice this summer.
And SportsBoom are claiming that Wrexham and Rangers are in the race to sign Windass, 31, who enjoyed his best scoring season in a league campaign since 2017/18 with 13 goals and five assists in 44 Championship games for Sheffield Wednesday last time round, ending the season as their top scorer.
In 182 games for the Owls, Windass has scored 53 goals and assisted 23 more. And in 173 Championship games in his career, the former Rangers man has scored 40 goals, with 17 assists to his name too. Owls boss Danny Rohl described Windass as ‘outstanding’ last season.
Josh Windass could play key role in another potential Wrexham transfer
Windass isn’t the only Wednesday player linked with a move to the Racecourse right now. Recent reports have revealed how Wrexham are interested in signing Barry Bannan as well, though a move for the long-term Owls skipper seems more complicated.
Bannan is among those to state his intent to stay with the club despite its current predicament. The latest here is that Bannan has been offered a new contract by Sheffield Wednesday, but the 34-year-old is now technically a free agent.
Though should Windass make the move to Wrexham then he could easily play agent in a potential move for Bannan, who may yet have no choice but to leave Hillsborough after 10 years, and join a club with much more stability and security.
