Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds pays emotional tribute to departing Paul Mullin
Mullin scored 110 goals in 172 games for Wrexham as they rose from non-league to the Championship
Ryan Reynolds says he cannot picture Paul Mullin playing in anything other than a Wrexham strip after the striker joined Wigan on loan.
Mullin has been a talismanic figure for Wrexham since Hollywood A-lister Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney bought the Welsh club in 2021.
The 30-year-old has scored 110 goals in 172 games since arriving from Cambridge nearly four years ago as Wrexham won three successive promotions to reach the Championship.
Mullin has been a central figure in the award-winning “Welcome to Wrexham” TV docuseries and even had a non-speaking cameo role in Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine as Welshpool, a Welsh version of Deadpool.
“I can’t imagine seeing Mulls on loan and in another kit,” Reynolds posted on X.
“We wouldn’t be where we are without his heart, skill and work ethic. We love you, SPM (Super Paul Mullin).”
Mullin wished Wrexham good luck on his departure for the 2025-26 campaign, posting on X: “All the best this season! Keep the train rolling”, adding a heart emoji.
The forward’s game-time at Wrexham was limited last season following surgery on a long-standing back issue.
He has two years left on his Racecourse contract, but was pushed down the pecking order by the January arrivals of strikers Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez.
The Red Dragons further added to their forward department last week by signing Ryan Hardie from Plymouth in a reported £700,000 deal.
Wrexham captain James McClean wrote about Mullin’s move to League One Wigan on Instagram, saying: “All the best mate. Rip it up.”
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has reiterated the need for Paul Mullin to have consistent game time after he completed a loan move to Wigan Athletic on Monday.
The frontman was a goalscoring machine in each of the three previous seasons, scooping Top Goalscorer and Player of the Season awards as the Red Dragons earned sensational back-to-back promotions from the National League into League One.
However, it wasn’t plain sailing for Mullin in the third tier season, with the 30-year-old undergoing spinal surgery in the summer, which followed a steep reduction in playing time under Phil Parkinson.
Mullin went on to score just five times last term, with just three in the league, and making only nine starts in total.
As promotion to the Championship was confirmed, the Welsh outfit have felt that Mullin isn’t quite ready for the step-up in class, and want to see him prove his credentials in League One with more regular first-team minutes.
As Mullin’s move to Wigan was confirmed, Wrexham boss Parkinson clarified why he has made a brief exit from the club.
Phil Parkinson admits Paul Mullin loan exit was because of a lack of game time
With the news confirmed on Wrexham’s club website, manager Phil Parkinson commented on Paul Mullin’s departure, highlighting the reason for sanctioning this switch.
Parkinson said: I’d like to wish Paul all the best for his loan move.
“It’s a good opportunity for him to get back to playing regular first-team football and I’m sure he’s going to be a great signing for Wigan Athletic.”
