Re-introducing Wrexham’s forgotten man who could save Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney millions next season
Wrexham under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney already have money in the bank, especially so after taking the club to the Championship. But more can’t hurt.
Wrexham, Wrexham, Wrexham. Football fans might be sick of hearing the name. But obviously not Wrexham fans. They can’t get enough of Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Phil Parkinson and all the players.
This summer, Wrexham are ready to spend £25million on new players alone. It’s also reported that we’ll see a huge bump in the amount that Wrexham can pay new players in wages, too, on top of the sheer goldmine that Reynolds and McElhenney are now sitting on top of.
Following promotion to the Championship, it was reported that Wrexham is now worth £150million as a club, making for a 7,400% increase on the initial £2million that the Hollywood actors took over the club for.
But whilst all this money talk flies about, there’s one player already at the club who’s almost been forgotten, but who could save Wrexham and their brilliant owners millions of pounds.
Can Modou Faal resurrect his Wrexham career?
Modou Faal has become a bit of a divisive talking point in Wales. Wrexham paid £500,000 to sign Faal last summer and in spells he looked like a player who could certainly live up to that price tag, and then some. But those spells amounted to just eight League One appearances and no goals or assists.
Faal was injured for most of the 2024/25 season, playing against Reading in March but not playing again that season. What happens with the Gambian this summer remains to be seen: it’s even been speculated that Faal could leave Wrexham on loan in a bid to get back on his feet.
But Parkinson should be inclined to take stock first, give Faal a chance to get back to fitness, and potential unearth a Championship gem in the process.
Modou Faal has all the attributes of a brilliant Championship player
There’s a reason why Wrexham signed Faal. He showed some really promising signs in loan spells with Doncaster Rovers and Walsall, albeit in the lower leagues of the EFL, but signs nonetheless.
Still 22, Faal is a young player. A prospect even. And we saw last season, even in the very little game time he got, a hugely powerful and bustling forward who was a real handful for defenders, and that’s the type of striker that could prove very useful in the Championship.
Right now, Parkinson’s options up top are arguably more technical than anything. After Steven Fletcher left Wrexham, and Mullin too, Wrexham don’t really have a battering ram up front, and Faal isn’t just that, but a scorer too, as he’s shown in previous campaigns.
This pre-season could be Faal’s one and only chance to show Parkinson that he’s worthy of a place in the side. But if he does enough to stay and be a part of next season, then Wrexham could save themselves millions by playing Faal and not signing another new striker.
