Middlesbrough agree Luton Town compensation fee as Rob Edwards set to replace Michael Carrick

Middlesbrough have agreed a deal with former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards to replace Michael Carrick as manager.

Boro parted ways with Michael Carrick on June 4 after a disappointing 2024/25 that saw the team finish 10th – their lowest league position under the former Manchester United man.

Middlesbrough were looking at a number of candidates for the role, including the likes of Danny Rohl and Steve Cooper.

We reported previously that chairman and owner Steve Gibson held talks with Rob Edwards, formerly of Luton Town, over the weekend.

And a deal for the ex-Hatters manager has now been reached.

Edwards helped Luton win promotion to the Premier League before relegation in 2023/24 and a tough first half of last season, which saw the manager depart in January 2025.

Now, EFL Analysis has gained exclusive information via our chief transfer correspondent, Graeme Bailey, regarding Boro’s pursuit of the manager.

And we understand that Middlesbrough have reached an agreement with Luton over compensation for Edwards – who has agreed terms to move to The Riverside.

Edwards was placed on gardening leave earlier in the year, while Boro and Luton already had a good relationship thanks to the Isaiah Jones transfer in the latest winter transfer window.

Rob Edwards’ managerial record

Edwards took charge of 103 matches as Luton boss, with an average of 1.18 points per game.

In 2024/25, he oversaw seven wins, four draws and 15 defeats across 26 Championship fixtures.

Overall, the incoming Middlesbrough boss has a 37.3 percent win rate as a manager.

Edwards has previously had spells in the dugouts of Forest Green Rovers and Watford.
