BOSTON – Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks posted on his Instagram Thursday saying that he and his wife have received death threats due to his recent on-field struggles.
Hendriks, a three-time MLB All-Star and cancer survivor, allowed three runs in relief as the Red Sox lost 5-1 to the New York Mets on Wednesday. Prior to that, he allowed two runs in the top of the ninth as the Red Sox lost 4-2 to the Atlanta Braves on May 16.
“Just as an FYI: Threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help,” Hendriks wrote in an Instagram story posted Thursday. “Leaving comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen attacking players and their families. Whether you do it from your ‘fake accounts’ or are dumb enough to do it from your real account.
“I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their career when I say: Enough is enough,” he added.
