BOSTON – Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks posted on his Instagram Thursday saying that he and his wife have received death threats due to his recent on-field struggles.

Hendriks, a three-time MLB All-Star and cancer survivor, allowed three runs in relief as the Red Sox lost 5-1 to the New York Mets on Wednesday. Prior to that, he allowed two runs in the top of the ninth as the Red Sox lost 4-2 to the Atlanta Braves on May 16.

“Just as an FYI: Threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help,” Hendriks wrote in an Instagram story posted Thursday. “Leaving comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen attacking players and their families. Whether you do it from your ‘fake accounts’ or are dumb enough to do it from your real account.

“I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their career when I say: Enough is enough,” he added.

Hendriks has pitched in 11 games this season, posting an 0-1 record and 5.61 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched. He made his season debut on April 20, his first appearance since June 9, 2023, due to battling non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and recovering from elbow injury-induced Tommy John surgery.
Hendriks’ post comes less than two weeks after Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers said he and his family had also received death threats due to his on-field performance.

“I understand people are very passionate and people love the Astros and love sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with,” McCullers said.
In April, Hendriks’ teammate and Red Sox star Jarren Duran revealed he attempted suicide in 2022 due to on-field struggles.
“I’d go out to center and hear, ‘Go back to Triple A, you don’t belong here.’ They didn’t know how hard I was trying,” Duran said during episode four of eight-part docuseries “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox.” “I couldn’t deal with telling myself how much I sucked every (expletive) day. I was already hearing it from fans. And what they said to me, [it was like], ‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror.’ That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore …”
