The prolific striker will leave the Championship club after scoring an eyewatering 110 goals

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has joined Wigan on loan until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Mullin, a central figure in Wrexham’s rise under co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has scored 110 goals in 172 games since arriving from Cambridge nearly four years ago.

The 30-year-old even had a non-speaking cameo role in Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine as ‘Welshpool’, a Welsh version of Deadpool.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told the club website: “I’d like to wish Paul all the best for his loan move.

Mullin’s game-time at Wrexham was limited following surgery on a long-standing back issue last summer.

Mullin, who is a popular figure with Wrexham’s fans and Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has tried to play down rumours of a rift between him and Parkinson.

But he admitted to feeling resentment at being left out of the team during a recently aired episode of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

“I let that get to me, to be honest, from where I’ve been to then only being allowed to play four games and finding myself being left out of the team,” Mullin said.

“I resented it and I carried that for weeks because I felt it was unjust.

“I think I’m more annoyed now. It’s the annoyance of training every single day, doing everything I can, and looking back on everything I’ve done.

“I feel like I was a main part of why we got into this situation, and then I’m not being allowed the platform to get back there, or the opportunity to go and do it again. It’s difficult. I don’t know what’s caused him (Parkinson) to trust me less, but he clearly does.”

Mullin has issued a farewell to Wrexham on Instagram after sealing a loan move to Wigan Athletic after a season in which he was limited to just nine starts in League One. He scored three goals in that time, but will now aim to get back to playing regularly after confirming his exit from the Welsh club.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since joining Wrexham, when they were a non-league club, he has fired them up the leagues, scoring 105 goals in 165 games as they rose up to the second-tier. Now, he will aim to help fire Wigan back into the Championship; they finished 15th last season.
