Significant Sheffield Wednesday takeover update emerges amid ‘derisory’ bid

Sheffield Wednesday have rejected a ‘derisory’ takeover bid from an American consortium, it has been confirmed to The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured another turbulent season. SWFC have made progress up the Championship table after last year’s relegation battle.

However, there are several unanswered questions going into an important summer, one of which surrounds a potential takeover at Hillsborough.

Owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri has come under fire for his continued mismanagement of Wednesday. The most recent debacle saw players and staff’s day delayed in March, prompting nw protests calling for the Thai businessman to sell up.

Now, amid recent reports of interest in Sheffield Wednesday, The Star states a takeover bid has been knocked back.

As confirmed by a club spokesperson, a consortium from the U.S. made up of businesspeople and professional athletes lodged what has been described as a ‘derisory’ offer for SWFC over Easter. The statement read:

“We can confirm an expression of interest was received from USA-based investors, working together with a previous sponsor of the club. No proof of funds was presented, nor the identity of the investors, and the offer was derisory.”

Adam Shaw, a businessman based in Florida who was raised in Sheffield, is suggested to have been involved but did not comment when approached.

The right candidate

Sheffield Wednesday owner and chairman Chansiri has said on several occasions that he will need to be approached by the right candidate with the right offer to sell up at Hillsborough.

The profile of bidder seems to be a rather specific one, given that several interested parties have come and gone. Of course, among them will have been a fair few chancers over the years, but no one has got anywhere near tempting Chansiri into selling up it seems.

After a derisory offer from this new U.S. group, time will tell if they come back in with new terms or if they prove to be the latest pushed away by Chansiri.

Another summer of jeopardy at Sheffield Wednesday

Even when things are set up for Sheffield Wednesday to progress, it feels that jeopardy is never far away at Hillsborough.

Between the shock exit of Darren Moore after promotion, potential registration embargoes, takeover speculation and doubts over Danny Rohl’s future, periods where SWFC are truly stable heading into summer windows.

With Rohl’s future uncertain and takeover rumours circulating again, it remains to be seen just what lays ahead of Wednesday over the coming months. It will be hoped they can end this season on a positive note away to Watford this weekend as the Owls eye a respectable mid-table finish.
