Wrexham could target surprising position on transfer deadline day following Phil Parkinson comments
Wrexham could make a shock move to strengthen a key position before Monday’s transfer deadline passes.
Wrexham fans should be fairly pleased with their club’s transfer business during the 2025 winter window, even if it took a while to happen.
The Red Dragons clearly needed a new number nine through the door amid the woes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.
And though it took them a full month to do so, the Welsh outfit have signed two quality options.
Jay Rodriguez is a Premier League-proven addition, while Sam Smith is one of the top scorers in League One this term.
Ryan Longman has also come into the team and already looks to have improved Wrexham, adding some much-needed quality depth at right-wing-back.
But there may be another position the club should be looking to strengthen before the window slams shut.
Wrexham could target goalkeeper after Phil Parkinson comments
As well as up top, Wrexham have had some problems in the goalkeeper department in the 2024/25 season.
Callum Burton is now likely out for the year, and Arthur Okonkwo also had a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Okonkwo has returned to the starting lineup recently but his form has been far from great.
The ex-Arsenal man cost Wrexham against Stevenage and was then dropped for the win over Crawley Town.
After that match, Phil Parkinson explained his decision to drop Okonkwo, as per BBC Sport, suggesting he was put back into the team too early.
He said: “With Arthur, he’s not been quite right since he’s come back. We probably put him back in too soon and he probably needed to come out.”
When Okonkwo and Burton have been out, Mark Howard has come into the eleven but while something of a club legend, Wrexham do look weaker when he is between the sticks.
Parkinson has left the door open to Wrexham signings on deadline day and goalkeeper should be a positon they look at given Okonkwo’s recent woes
Mark Howard Wrexham record in 2024/25
The 38-year-old has always been a reliable backup option but now the club are plying their trade in League One, he probably shouldn’t be a regular starter.
Howard has been in from the off in seven League One fixtures this term and the Red Dragons have managed to keep just one clean sheet.
This comes despite the fact none of those games were against any of the top-six teams and Wrexham have, for the most part, been very good defensively this term.
So, if Okonkwo needs to drop out again, it may be wise for the Welsh outfit to bring in another keeper to replace Howard as second choice.
