Tony Dungy Makes Shocking Prediction for Steelers' Next Quarterback - Athlon Sports

Tony Dungy Makes Shocking Prediction for Steelers’ Next Quarterback

As the 2025 NFL draft continues to draw closer, the Pittsburgh Steelers still do not have an ideal quarterback situation. If the season were to start right now, Mason Rudolph would be their starter.

Of course, the rumors and speculation continue to swirl around future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. He could still end up with the Steelers, but he has continued playing the waiting game. Pittsburgh should be strongly consider drafting its quarterback of the future.

Looking ahead to the draft, the Steelers hold the No. 21 overall pick. They have been connected to both Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Draft as potential targets with that selection. However, former NFL head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Tony Dungy has made a shocking prediction for who will end up being Pittsburgh’s next quarterback. While participating in a mock draft for NBC Sports, Dungy had the Steelers taking Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel at No. 21 overall.

Former Steeler Predicts Shocking First-Round Pick: 'It is a Reach' - Yahoo Sports

“We’ve gotta address that quarterback position,” Dungy said. “I’m gonna make a shocking pick here and I’m gonna pick Dillon Gabriel from the University of Oregon. I think he’s a Bo Nix clone. He’s played six years in college football, he’s thrown over 1,300 passes.

He’s got a high percentage of completions. Doesn’t throw interceptions. He’s mobile. He doesn’t have maybe the big name of Sanders, but I think he is a guy who can step in and play and fix that quarterback position.”

Making the move to pick Gabriel in the first round at No. 21 would be a shocker. He is widely projected to be selected somewhere between the fourth and seventh round.

Dungy is not going to be right about this prediction. Gabriel could land in Pittsburgh later in the draft, but not at No. 21. Gabriel is coming off of a strong season with the Ducks in 2024. He completed 72.9% of his pass attempts for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He also ran for 149 yards and seven more scores.
