Tottenham ponder hijacking Chelsea move for Xavi Simons
Tottenham Hotspur may attempt to steal a march on Chelsea for 22-year-old RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons in the final days of the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Caught Offside, Xavi Simons is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lillywhites are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a versatile playmaker in the final days of the summer transfer window. So, the 22-year-old RB Leipzig attacker has emerged as a target for the North London outfit.
The Dutchman has been a target for Chelsea for several weeks, and the Blues have been attempting to secure his services during their discussions with the Bundesliga club. However, Tottenham may look to hijack Chelsea’s move for Simons in the final days of the summer transfer window.
Xavi Simons and his Bundesliga journey so far
Xavi Simons has come leaps and bounds since joining RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain. Die Roten Bullen initially signed the 22-year-old playmaker on loan in July 2023 before completing a permanent move earlier this year. The youngster’s progress has also helped him break into his national squad.
The Dutch playmaker has made considerable progress at RB Leipzig, turning out 78 times thus far for the Bundesliga outfit while chipping in with 22 goals and 24 assists. Meanwhile, the Netherlands international has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs with his exploits for Leipzig. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the final days of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea’s interest in Xavi Simons is baffling. With Cole Palmer the first-choice option to reprise the no. 10 role, the RB Leipzig playmaker does not fit into the scheme of things unless the Englishman plays on the right flank. Nevertheless, Simons is a top target for Chelsea, with the youngster reportedly pushing to move to Stamford Bridge. The two parties also have an agreement on personal terms.
As for Tottenham, Simons has been on the North London club’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, considering they recently failed to sign Eberechi Eze before he joined Arsenal. With James Maddison on the sidelines due to a long-term knee injury, the 22-year-old Dutchman is an option worth considering.
However, with Chelsea and Simons striking an agreement on personal terms, Tottenham may have fallen behind in the battle for his signature. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners hijack Chelsea’s move for the Dutch playmaker.
