Done Deal: Tottenham has verbally agreed to an unexpected signing of “one of the best defenders in the world,” who will go on Monday for a medical examination.

Tottenham Hotspur have begun to make moves about a deal to sign Barcelona star Ronald Araujo this summer, according to Fichajes.net.

The Lilywhites have had a strong summer transfer window under new manager Thomas Frank so far with the arrival of young defender Kota Takai, forward Mohammed Kudus and the imminent arrival of midfielder Joao Palhinha, while Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso’s loans were made permanent too.

The club have also been able to keep hold of key star Cristian Romero despite strong interest from Atletico Madrid, and now it seems that they are looking to provide him with some competition or a new partner.

Ronald Araujo

Araujo, who was described by Carles Puyol as “one of the best defenders in the world”, has fallen down the pecking order at the Camp Nou under Hansi Flick, with youngster Pau Cubarsi now considered to be the first-choice centre-back alongside Inigo Martinez or Andreas Christensen, while Jules Kounde is the first-choice right-back.

That has seen the club consider a sale for the 26-year-old as they look to raise funds once again this summer, with their financial situation still precarious after another busy summer transfer window.

It’s understood that Spurs are looking to bolster the physical profile of their defence and they have identified Araujo as a perfect fit, and their interest in a deal is currently the most serious of anyone’s.

Barcelona are not in a position where they have to sell, but if the right offer comes in then they could be open to a deal, and it’s believed that Araujo would also be open to moving for more regular first-team football for the right club.

Spurs already have Micky Van de Ven alongside the previously mentioned Romero and Danso as centre-back options, but Araujo has experience at the very highest-level and would provide added quality to a squad looking to compete in the Champions League and Premier League this season, which makes this an appealing move for all parties if the numbers are right.

20-year-old “scary” midfielder tipped to stay at Manchester United amid muted Tottenham interest

Tottenham Hotspur have made one very solid reinforcement in the summer transfer window so far, bringing in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United. The Ghanaian has already impressed during his pre-season appearances.

Thomas Frank has come to North London with his own set of ideas. The Danish tactician’s tactical imprint has been visible in the way the team has played so far, but he will know that they need to keep getting better and be ready in time for the 2025/26 Premier League season opener.

In terms of signings, it is very clear that Spurs would like to do more than they have done so far. However, it is also important to remember that the Lilywhites have a very talented squad that is quite well-sorted in many positions.

Kobbie Mainoo has muted interest from Tottenham

Ex-goalkeeper Paul Robinson on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is expected to stay at M16 despite muted interest from Tottenham. He said:

“The Kobbie Mainoo situation has gone extremely quiet. He played 25 Premier League games last season and was a big part of Ruben Amorim’s plans, and he’s been away with the team in pre-season. The words coming out from the Kobbie Mainoo camp are that all focus is on Man United.”

Robinson then went on to highlight how Tottenham were linked with a potential move for the youngster but haven’t really progressed on this front. He continued:

“There’s no word of a new contract coming out for him, there’s been no word that he’s in talks for a new deal, and there’s no word that he’s in talks over a move. There’s been muted interest from Tottenham, another club that have been linked with him. He’s a top-quality young player, but at the moment all is extremely quiet.”

Mainoo is one of the most talented players to have come through Man Utd’s academy in recent years. He got labelled “scary” by Luke Shaw for the pace at which he was developing who even claimed that the footballing world was his oyster.
