Stoke City still keen on landing 27-year-old despite latest development
Stoke City are ‘still keen’ on Bristol City man Mark Sykes, according to reporter Fraser Fletcher on X.
Stoke City have seen a bid rejected by Bristol City already, as per BristolLive. SCFC have until the end of the January transfer window to try and strike a deal.
Sykes, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season. He is due to become a free agent in late June as things stand, unless he pens an extension at Ashton Gate in the meantime.
In this latest update regarding his future with the Robins this month, journalist Fletcher has claimed on X that the Potters’ pursuit is ‘not over’ just yet. The deadline is on Monday 3rd February.
Stoke City drew 0-0 at home to Oxford United last time out in the Championship and are sat in 20th place in the table on 29 points, two points above the drop zone.
Stoke City still want Mark Sykes
Bristol City risk losing Sykes for free if they don’t pick up a fee for him now.
They signed the Belfast-born man back in 2022 and he has since been an important player.
He can play in midfield, on the wing or at full-back which makes him a useful asset to have.
Sykes has made 99 appearances in all competitions for the Robins to date and has scored 11 goals.
After joining Bristol City, he told their website at the time: “I’m delighted, I came over last week and met the manager, everything was positive. I’ve always wanted to play in the Championship and the manager was honest with me – he told me he would give me a chance here at the club so hopefully things keep moving in the right direction.
“It’s unbelievable here to be honest, I’ve only been at two clubs so I don’t have vast experience at training grounds but from what I can see here it’s unbelievable. It’s top-class, no complaints.”
Sykes started his career at Glenavon in the NIFL Premiership before moving over to England as a youngster when Oxford United came calling.
He went on to play 135 matches for the U’s, chipping in with 11 goals, before Bristol City swooped in.
