Colchester United aim to add ahead of transfer deadline
And the U’s head coach Danny Cowley says they are looking to end the January transfer window in a ‘stronger place’ than when they came into it.
Colchester have already made three new loan signings in the January window and are hoping to further add to their squad, ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline.
Cowley said: “It’s a challenge.
“It’s definitely a tough window for us, especially without a sporting director and head of recruitment.
“It’s been busy and my phone has been red hot, I think it’s fair to say.
“We’re just trying to navigate through it as best we can and we want to leave the window in a stronger place than when we came into it.
“That’s always our aim and our ambition.”
Colchester have already brought in loan signings Michael Forbes, Jack Tucker and Tyreece Simpson in the winter transfer window from West Ham United, MK Dons and Stevenage respectively.
But the U’s are looking to add more loanees to their squad before the deadline if possible.
“If we could bring two or three more in, I think it would really help the group,” said Cowley.
“Our ambition every window is to get better.
“I think this window is quite unique, as we’ve probably only had loans to work with and we understand this and we’re just trying to find the right players to help and complement the really good group that we already have.”
Cowley is hoping Colchester can keep hold of striker Samson Tovide amid interest from higher-placed clubs but has said that youngsters Frankie Terry and Max Jolliffe could leave on loan.
Cowley said: “We have some loan players that we’d like to get out on loan if possible, so that they can continue their development which I think is important, boys like Max Jolliffe and Frankie Terry.
“Frankie did get in the National League in the first half of the season at Braintree and they’re desperate to have him back.
“But I also know that there’s a lot of other interest in him.
“Max had a brilliant first half of the season at Maldon and Tiptree.
“We have high hopes for Max and we’d really like to get him a loan in the National League or the National League South.
“He’s certainly pushing our squad, at the moment, so we’ll wait to see on that.”
