Brewers, William Contreras 2025 contract

DEAL CONFIRMED: William Contreras agree to deal potentially spanning 2 years With Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee Brewers star catcher William Contreras is entering his first year of arbitration.  This means rather than earn a pre-arbitration salary in the $700,000 range like he had each of the past three seasons, he will get a significant pay raise in 2025. In Contreras’ case, he is eligible for three years of arbitration.

In order to fully understand the process, we have to review a few key dates that passed during the off-season.  First off, in November there was the tender deadline.  At this time, Milwaukee elected to give Contreras a contract for the 2025 season, but the exact salary did not have to be determined at that time and could be negotiated.

Less than a month ago, in early January, the filing deadline passed.  This is a date where both the Brewers and Contreras’ party had to reveal how much money they thought Contreras should make in 2025.  Negotiations could still continue after that, but if a deal was not made then an arbitrator would determine the salary in a February court hearing.

The Milwaukee Brewers and William Contreras have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a contract

Per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Contreras and the Brewers have agreed to a contract, avoiding arbitration, and the deal can potentially span the next two years as there is a club option attached to the 2026 season.  To be clear, should the 2026 club option be declined, Contreras would still remain a Brewer as that would be his second year of arbitration.  The reason Milwaukee would decline it is if its value is higher than what they think Contreras would make in arbitration.

According to Mark Feinsand, Contreras will earn $6.0 million in 2025.  The 2026 club option is worth $12.0 million and includes a $100,000 buyout.
