A number of Premier League sides also hold interest, but initial indications are Bellingham is preparing to follow a similar path to his brother Jude who extolled the benefits of life in Germany with Dortmund.

After three years at Dortmund, Jude – who spoke to his brother via video call after the play-off final – went on to join Real Madrid, and is now a Real Madrid regular.

Bellingham is expected to be given a tour of facilities at Frankfurt as they look to convince him of the move.

Sunderland have been aware of ongoing interest since January. His previous club Birmingham City are also due a significant sell-on.

The Magpies would be keen to keep hold of the midfielder, but would command a decent fee if he was to leave.

How Liverpool’s day of joy turned into their worst nightmare: Fans tell their harrowing stories after a car ploughed into supporters in title parade horror, as man is arrested and city is left in mourning, writes DOMINIC KING

The greatest day became one of the darkest days. How could this happen? One moment there was a tickertape explosion, the sky thick with plumes of red smoke, the new smell of celebration.

Then, in the next step, came the piercing screams, flashing blue lights and the overwhelming sense of horror. Fans had descended in their hundreds of thousands in celebration. They left having witnessed a tragedy, knowing a city was in mourning.

How Borussia Dortmund have the inside track on Jobe Bellingham ahead of Manchester United and Crystal Palace

We don’t know the motives or intentions behind one lone man’s decision to plough a car into revellers, but we do know the impact it has had and the nightmare that has been inflicted.

How will anyone be able to think about Liverpool’s 20th league championship without making the association with 6pm on Monday, May 26, when the worlds of innocent people caved in?

To walk along The Strand at 8.30pm, to see it empty except for a few police officers in their high visibility jackets, was surreal, like a scene from an apocalyptic Hollywood film. Even the Queen Anne, Cunard’s majestic cruise liner who is visiting Liverpool, looked like a ghost ship alongside the Pier Head.

On the floor were bottles, empty smoke canisters, the remnants of those tickertape cannons and even a discarded picnic chair, but there were no people. The reason for that became obvious as you looked up Water Street.
