Nottingham Forest transfer talks confirmed as director of football addresses contract situation
Lewis O’Brien enjoyed a fruitful spell with Swansea City last season
Sky Bet Championship club Swansea City have shown an interest in signing Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien permanently this summer.
The 26-year-old had a loan spell in south Wales last season where he played a pivotal role in a great run of form at the end of the campaign which saw the Swans win five of their last seven.
He started all 16 games for the club after arriving in February, producing a string of impressive performances and scoring in a 3-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle in Apri
O’Brien, who joined Forest from Huddersfield Town in 2022, has just one year left on his deal at the City Ground, and a host of clubs in England, as well as Spanish giants Valencia, are reportedly showing an interest.
Swansea director of football Richard Montague spoke to Wales Online where he insisted “the door is still open” for the player to make his stay permanent.
“We have had good conversations with Forest,” he explained.
They were really good to deal with last season, they sent us a really nice message to thank us for how well Lewis did with us, which was great to receive.
“We have a good dialogue with them, the ball is a little bit in their court at the moment because of Lewis’ contract situation.
“He is on a Premier League salary and there needs to be some give in some sense to make it work for us, but it’s definitely an option that’s still on the table.
“We are talking to Lewis and having good conversations with Forest.
“We would love to be able to do something. It’s just timing and matching it all up with the financial realities.”
Morgan Gibbs-White continues to be the subject of transfer speculation, despite Manchester City cooling their interest in the Nottingham Forest ace.
City had been eyeing up Gibbs-White for some time amid their search for a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. However, with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki seemingly set for moves to the Etihad Stadium, a swoop for the Reds man was said to have become unlikely.
Gibbs-White has other admirers, though, and it seems rumours about his future at the City Ground are not going to go away. Chelsea are the latest club said to have taken an interest in the England international.
