Wrexham want to sign 19-year-old ‘sensation’ as part of academy overhaul this summer

Wrexham are starting to put a lot more focus on their youth academy, and on signing more younger players in general, with a potential star in the making now on their radar.

Wrexham have had a very clear transfer policy over the last few years: signing more older and experienced players, often towards the end of their careers and looking for one last hurrah.

And it’s a policy that has served them well. Going into this season, Phil Parkinson has already made it clear that Wrexham want to sign more experienced players ahead of the club’s Championship campaign, and few could blame the Dragons for doing so.

But there’s a growing sense among fans and likely behind the scenes too that something needs to change at some point. We may have already seen that after Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie this summer: a player who’s experienced in the Championship and only 28 years old.

We’ve seen other links that might suggest a change in approach this summer as well, with Wrexham linked with Jack Kingdon at Manchester United, who’s just been released by the Premier League giants.

Wrexham in transfer race to sign Jayden Carbon

There’s now another name to keep tabs on in Jayden Carbon. The 19-year-old attacker enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Oxford City last season, in the sixth-tier of English football, scoring six goals in 43 games in all competitions, having now attracted the interest of Wrexham and Leicester City.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed on X that the Championship pair are ‘tracking’ the ‘sensation’ that is Carbon, although there remains very little information about the player as of yet, and very little information on what a potential move to the Racecourse would look like.

Earlier this week, Wrexham announced the signing of Danny Ward to take their summer signings tally up to two so far, with many more expected as the club gears up for what is going to be a gruelling campaign in the second tier.

What Phil Parkinson recently said about Wrexham’s youth academy

Last year, Wrexham had plans approved to build a new academy. On top of that they’ve expanded the age groups which it covers, and Parkinson has now admitted that those behind the scenes at the club are really playing catch up in a bid to get the club’s academy to where it needs to be.

Speaking in a recent interview, Parkinson said of Wrexham’s youth academy plans: “So we, or they [Reynolds and McElhenney] and the staff are putting a structure together to give us a great chance, and we know that the academy going forward is going to be crucial for us, because we need to produce our own players.
