Three Time Super Bowl Champ to Lead OSU Defense

Ohio State Gets Good News by Landing Two-Time Super Bowl Champ Coach on Wednesday

The retooled Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff is starting to take shape as Ryan Day made a significant addition on Wednesday. Day has been forced to reshape his staff after losing four assistants since the Buckeyes won the national championship. The Buckeyes were in the market for new offensive and defensive coordinators. Ohio State already announced that Brian Hartline would take over as the offensive coordinator for a departed Chip Kelly. Now, the Buckeyes have found a replacement for former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles who took the same role with the Penn State Nittany Lions. On3.com’s Pete Nakos reported that Ohio State is hiring longtime NFL coach Matt Patricia to be the team’s new defensive coordinator. “A source tells @On3sports that this deal will get done and Matt Patricia will be the next defensive coordinator at Ohio State,” Nakos detailed in a Wednesday message on X. Patricia’s result as an NFL head coach left a lot to be desired going just 13-29 during his time with the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020. The veteran coach has had success as both an assistant and coordinator. Patricia was a longtime assistant under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots winning two Super Bowls during their time together. Patricia spent last season working for the 33rd Team.

Ohio State on Verge of Major Announcement on Coaching Changes

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been battling for both coaches and players since winning the national championship. Head coach Ryan Day has been in search of three new assistants, including offensive and defensive coordinators.

Day lost key assistants as the Buckeyes were also fighting off opposing college football programs looking to entice top players to enter the transfer portal. Former defensive coordinator Jim Knowles took the same position with the Penn State Nittany Lions, notably a Big Ten rival.

Fresh off being the offensive coordinator for one of the top offenses in the College Football Playoff, Chip Kelly returned to the NFL to take the same position on Pete Carroll’s staff with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Day is one step closer to solidifying the coaching staff by making a decision on his offensive coordinator. Additionally, On3.com’s Pete Nakos reported that the Buckeyes are “expected to hire” Virginia Tech Hokies offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to be the team’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator.
