Ryan Reynolds makes exciting transfer announcement as Wrexham chase five deals

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has dropped the biggest hint yet that the club will spend big this summer, with several players already linked with a move to the Racecourse

Ryan Reynolds has indicated that Wrexham will spend big in the summer transfer market as they aim to compete in the Championship.

The North Wales outfit secured their third successive promotion last month, climbing out of League One at the first time of asking. Manager Phil Parkinson has already put plans in motion to bring in new faces, insisting he will have a strict “no superstars, no egos” approach to recruitment.

Aaron Cresswell

The former Sunderland and Bolton boss has been well-backed by Reynolds and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney since taking the helm in July 2021. And the Deadpool actor has now dropped a major hint over the scale of their transfer ambitions, while also highlighting the need for the club to be financially sustainable.

Speaking on the RobRyanRed fan podcast, Reynolds said: “We’re coming to win. I can’t give you a dollar figure, but I can tell you that we are going to be as aggressive as we can possibly be while being mindful of sustainability. We have a stadium to revamp, but will still maintain its character and culture.”

Despite writing the cheques, McElhenney insisted that he and Reynolds are often the last to know about new arrivals. “I start hearing the names out there on social media or whatever, but we don’t really know any of that until Phil tells us,” he said “By that point, it’s already essentially happened.”

Wrexham have already been linked with several players ahead of the window opening in June. Here, WalesOnline looks at five deals they could pursue as they prepare for life in the second tier.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell is one of the latest names to be connected with a move to Wrexham as her prepares to leave West Ham. The 35-year-old made his final appearance for the Hammers on Sunday, with Leeds also said to be keen on acquiring his services.

Reports suggest Wrexham could hold the advantage in the chase to sign the former England international due to their proximity to his native Merseyside. The club is also said to be preparing an attractive financial package in their bid to lure Cresswell to North Wales.

Harry Darling

Both Wrexham and Birmingham City are believed to be interested in Swansea defender Harry Darling. The centre-back is out of contract this summer, with talks over fresh terms having been restarted in recent weeks.

Darling has been one of the standout players for Swansea this season and his performances have caught the eye of suitors. Swans’ director of football Richard Montague said: “We’re hopeful of a positive outcome, but we recognise there are a lot of clubs that can offer a lot of things, and Harry needs to do what’s right for him and his family.”

Tom Cairney

Fulham captain Tom Cairney

Fulham captain Tom Cairney is claimed to be high on Parkinson’s list of targets, demonstrating the true scale of Wrexham’s ambition. The 34-year-old is facing an uncertain future with the Cottagers as his current deal runs into the final weeks.

Both Cairney and Fulham boss Marco Silva are eager for the influential midfielder to stay. However, Wrexham will be waiting in the wings if an extension fails to materialise.

Callum Robinson

Cardiff forward Callum Robinson could potentially be preparing to jump ship following the Bluebirds’ relegation, with Wrexham reported to be among the clubs tracking him. Robinson finished the season as the club’s top scorer last term, netting 12 times, despite his season being disrupted by an Achilles injury.
