West Brom stance on move for Sheffield Wednesday ace clarified by reporter
West Brom aren’t planning a move for Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan, according to journalist Steve Hermon on X.
West Brom have been linked with the veteran this summer along with Wrexham and Stoke City by Fraser Fletcher on X. WBA are preparing for another year in the Championship.
Bannan, 35, is out of contract at the end of the month and is due to become a free agent. It remains to be seen whether he will be staying at Sheffield Wednesday.
In this latest update, reporter Hermon has poured cold water on speculation suggesting the Baggies want him on his X account. The Midlands outfit are looking elsewhere for reinforcements.
Ryan Mason is the new manager at The Hawthorns. Following his appointment, chairman Shilen Patel told their website: “We are excited to have someone whose skillset means he has the aptitude to help us further establish elite standards in both preparation and player development for the first team and across all our team programmes.
“His experiences as both a first team player and coach under some of the game’s most respected minds, along with his time leading academy sides, will be instrumental as we shape a clear philosophy and unified identity at all levels at the Albion.”
West Brom not in for Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan
West Brom have recently brought in Nat Phillips from Liverpool. WBA have snapped him up to boost their backline.
Sheffield Wednesday will be desperate to keep hold of Bannan. He has been a great servant to them over recent years.
The Scotsman, who has made 27 caps for his country, joined the Owls back in 2015. He has since made 447 appearances in all competitions for the South Yorkshire outfit and has scored 35 goals.
Bannan played for Celtic from 2002 to 2004 before dropping down the border as a youngster. He was snapped up by Aston Villa and went on to play 83 times for their first-team. He was also loaned out away from Villa Park at Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United.
What now for West Brom?
West Brom will be aiming for promotion to the Premier League in the next campaign. WBA missed out on the play-offs last term.
The Baggies have taken a risk in turning to Mason. The 33-year-old is inexperienced and has never been a number one before. He spent his playing days at Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City.
As for Sheffield Wednesday and Bannan, time will tell whether he is still at Hillsborough by the time pre-season comes around. The Owls have some off-field issues going on at the moment and
