Swansea City issue clear update on Wrexham transfer target Harry Darling amid contract stand-off

It’s claimed that Wrexham and Birmingham City are interested in Darling who played a starring role for the Swans in 2024/25, featuring 39 times in the Championship and scoring an impressive five goals from defence.

Swansea City fans have mixed feelings about Darling who is seemingly playing hardball over his future, weighing up his options as he approaches the end of his three-year contract in Wales.

And the rumours that he could make the switch to Wrexham haven’t exactly gone down well with the Swansea faithful. Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham are also linked with several Cardiff City players including their 2024/25 top scorer Callum Robinson.

Swansea City in contract talks with Wrexham transfer target Harry Darling

On Friday, Wrexham released their retained list. The club is letting go of eight players including strikers Sam Dalby and Steven Fletcher, with Wrexham fans upset by Fletcher’s exit with many thinking he could’ve done a job in the Championship.

Swansea City also released their retained list on Friday. And in what will be of great interest to Parkinson and Wrexham, the Swans revealed the latest on Darling’s future with Swansea not giving up easily on the 25-year-old Englishman.

The club has stated: “Harry Darling has been offered a new contract to remain with the Swans, and discussions between the club and the player are ongoing.” There remains no indication as to whether he’ll eventually accept their offer.

The latest on Wrexham’s search for a new centre-back

A new centre-back or two looks like a key priority for Parkinson this summer, with the future of Eoghan O’Connell still unclear. O’Connell was supposedly out of contract this summer but there was no mention of him in the club’s retained list.

Other centre-backs linked with a move to the Racecourse, along with Darling, including Man United duo Jack Kingdon and Jonny Evans, who are both out of contract this summer, but United’s season isn’t over yet and so their retained list hasn’t been published.

Darling though looks like he’s really considering his options. And with Wrexham offering a £50,000-a-week contract to Tom Cairney it could mean that the club is ready to push the boat out for Darling too.

He’d be a great signing, albeit a controversial one from a Swans perspective.

Wrexham have set their sights on a marquee summer signing, two weeks before the summer transfer window is even open for business.

The summer transfer window opens on June 1st for teams in the English Football League. Wrexham then have two weeks until they can officially start to make new signings.

And plenty of new signings will be needed if the Dragons are to compete in the Championship under Phil Parkinson next season.

Thankfully, there’s been no end of potential new signings linked with moves to the Racecourse, and there’s one particularly exciting name being mentioned in Tom Cairney.

What’s been said about Tom Cairney leaving Fulham for Wrexham?

Earlier in the week it was revealed that Wrexham are interested in signing Cairney ahead of his Fulham contract expiring in the summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who’s played twice for Scotland, would become Wrexham’s highest-paid player should he arrive this summer, with a rather astronomical contract offer reportedly on the table.

It’s been claimed that Wrexham have offered Cairney a £50,000-a-week contract to join this summer which is almost twice what he’s currently earning at Craven Cottage.

Wrexham fans excited by potential Tom Cairney signing this summer

Money aside, Wrexham fans are very much excited by the prospect of Cairney joining the club this summer, with many having plenty to say on social media about the news.

Comments from Wrexham fans ranged from: “This genuinely makes so much sense”, to “Great Championship player”, and also “Would be a great move he’s a top player”.

This fan added: “Let’s be honest here. Tom Cairney to Wrexham will be an outstanding signing and a HUGE coup,” as a similar comment read: “He’d be a cracking signing, type of signing we’ll need to make as well I feel. Sure he’ll have many clubs after him though.”

Another Wrexham fan weighed in, posting: “Always thought of Cairney as a classy player. Remember him not getting in the Fulham team for a while as captain after his injury and always wondered why. A cracking ball player.”

Wrexham released their retained list on Thursday, letting go of eight players including midfielder Josh Adam.
