Coventry City given permission to trade in new transfer window as EFL make statement

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as the Sky Blues will have two transfer windows to prepare for next season

Coventry City will be allowed to sign players from June 1 after the EFL have announced a new transfer window for this summer.

The EFL will allow clubs to trade from June 1 to June 10 to match the Premier League’s mini window before the Club World Cup.

Clubs competing in the Club World Cup in the United States will use the window to sign players specifically for that tournament. Out-of-contract players can also sign short-term deals to participate in the Club World Cup.

A statement from the EFL explained: “Due to an additional FIFA Club World Cup Registration Period introduced ahead of the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, the EFL and its clubs have agreed that the summer transfer window shall operate for an additional ten-day period from Sunday 1 June 2025 to 19:00 on Tuesday 10 June 2025. This is due to the transfer window being unable to exceed a total of 89 days.

“The FIFA regulation on this matter permits the member associations of clubs playing in the FIFA Club World Cup to establish this exceptional registration period, and there is therefore likely to be considerable transfer activity taking place across the world’s major leagues during this time.

“The EFL therefore believes that its clubs should also have the opportunity to be active in the market at this time.”

Trading will stop for six days before the normal summer transfer window commences on June 16.

Deadline day this year will be Monday, September 1 and all transfers must be completed by 7pm.

Fabio Tavares looks set to leave Coventry City this summer and has already been offered a contract to continue playing in League One with Burton Albion.

The 24-year-old Sky Blues player spent the second half of the season at the Pirelli Stadium and despite limited game time, largely due to injury, has done enough to secure an offer from the club that finished a point and place about the relegation drop zone.

The Portuguese striker made just one start in ten appearances for the Brewers but scored twice as well as providing a vital assist against Cambridge United which led to their survival in the third-tier.

Although Tavares is officially out of contract at the CBS Arena on June 30, the fact that he joined the club as a development player from Rochdale back in the mid-term window of 2021, City could push for a nominal fee. However, it’s more likely that they will simply sanction the transfer.
