Yesterday was a day for Alex Bregman rumors.
Bregman’s top suitors are the Cubs, Red Sox, Astros and Blue Jays. The Astros are out. The Astros are in. The Tigers and Royals are making a play. Bregman is open to short-term deals. Bregman wants at least six years.
All this usually means a player is about to sign.
Interestingly, Cubs accounts on Twitter rumored that if the Cubs sign Bregman, they will trade second baseman/shortstop Nico Hoerner. Hoerner is the second best thing to Gimenez defensively and is a reliable 100 wRC+ under control for two years making him a good bridge to Bazzana and good insurance in case Rocchio falters, so if indeed Hoerner does become available, I hope the Guardians are involved. He did have right flexor tendon surgery in his elbow in October so he may not be ready for Opening Day.
Zack Meisel offered 30 notes on the 30 hitters invited to Guardians’ camp for the Athletic.
Some MLB owners are trying to delude themselves into thinking the players’ union will accept a salary cap if they miss a season of baseball. They will not. But pushing for increased revenue sharing and reforms there is a great idea. I am sure we can all rely on Rob Manfred to figure this out before we miss games in 2027 (sarcasm font).
Tommy Pham signed with the Pirates.
