Wrexham captain James McClean involved in car accident on way to training

Wrexham captain James McClean was involved in a car accident on his way to training Wednesday, the club has confirmed.

No other vehicle was involved in the incident on the A534 near Wrexham Golf Club shortly before 9am (GMT) as the former Republic of Ireland international travelled to practice.

McClean is said to be “fine” as he awaits further medical tests and North Wales Police confirmed no serious injuries were reported at the scene.

Footage of the car said to be involved posted on social media appeared to show substantial damage, including a smashed windscreen, as it was towed away by a recovery vehicle.

The A534 was closed until shortly before 10am after officers from the police and fire services attended.

Wrexham confirmed the incident in a club statement without naming McClean.

“Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training,” read a statement.

“It was a single-car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene.

“The player reported to the club this morning and will undergo further medical checks, as a precaution.”

A statement from North Wales Police read: “Shortly before 9am this morning (Wednesday, January 22), we received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A534 in Wrexham, near to Wrexham Golf Club.

“Officers and colleagues from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident, which had blocked the road until the vehicle was recovered shortly before 10am (GMT).

“No serious injuries were reported from the scene.”

Wrexham are next in action on Thursday against Birmingham City in a League One fixture being shown live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Wrexham’s players usually have Wednesday as a day off. But the moving of the Birmingham game from Saturday to tomorrow has led to a shift in the training schedule, meaning the squad had Monday off with yesterday and today spent on the training pitch.
