Aaron Ramsdale determined to impress at Southampton after Arsenal exit - 'I'm back stronger' - Eurosport

£13.5m Southampton flop emerges top free agent to fill Aaron Rams

Free agent goalkeeper Angus Gunn is well-placed to tempt his former employers Southampton into handing him Aaron Ramsdale’s gloves.

It’s no secret that Southampton are one of the huge admirers of Yahia Fofana’s talent and a summer move might suit all parties. The Saints desperately need someone to take Aaron Ramsdale’s No. 1 shirt and an in-form promising keeper like Fofana is a perfect market opportunity.

But drawing his current outfit Angers into a sale will demand forking out roughly €10m. Thus, the question arises, should Southampton spend a large portion of their transfer funds only on one player?

Plus, this issue can escalate if the Saints can’t attract good bids for star players like Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling. So, Southampton need to add more names to their shot-stopper shortlist and preferably, some free agents as well.

Southampton touted to explore Angus Gunn’s untapped potential

Hence, coming to the free transfers pool, the Football League World has suggested a former Saints flop who can finally succeed at St. Mary’s at the second time of asking. Lifting the lid on the suspense, it’s Angus Gunn whose £13.5m signing fee is more remembered at the club rather than his Premier League performances.

As a result, when Gunn departed four years ago, hardly any Southampton fan would have seen him returning, or even being linked with a homecoming. But being available on a free transfer and on the back of an encouraging Championship spell has changed everything.

Talking about the pros, there are plenty of exciting ones starting with his age. At 29-years-old, Gunn is truly in the prime of his career and he can be trusted to continue his upward trajectory for at least a couple of seasons.

That will buy Southampton some time and transfer fees over the years to invest in a rising goalkeeping prodigy. And even if Gunn doesn’t live up to some lofty expectations, Southampton know they have nothing to lose on this signing.

Further, it isn’t ruled out that Gunn can’t convince Southampton to stick with him in goal for a handful of seasons. After all, the club did see some potential in him while securing his services for an eye-watering £13.5m fee in the first place.

Hence, as dull as this Gunn deal appears to be, it might be one of Southampton’s underrated success stories of the summer
