Journalist shares if Sheffield Wednesday transfer embargo would be lifted after takeover
Sheffield Wednesday find themselves in hot water once more with Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay players again.
The Owls’ misfortunes under Dejphon Chansiri have continued this week after what was a frustrating 2024/25 season.
Sheffield Wednesday failed to pay players and staff in March, with cash flow issues cited as the reason.
And the same issue has returned this month, with it emerging on Friday, May 30, that Chansiri failed to pay wages once more in May.
The news was covered by Alan Nixon, who expressed worry that this could lead to a potential transfer embargo being imposed.
Will Sheffield Wednesday transfer embargo be lifted by takeover
Now, how a potential transfer ban would be impacted by a takeover of the club has been shared.
Talk of a Sheffield Wednesday takeover has been rife for some time now, with there said to be interest in the club from the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Journalist Joe Crann has been discussing the situation on social media and how an embargo would impact player signings.
He explained: “Just a note on the embargo situation, because of the size of #SWFC’s squad currently, as per the EFL’s rules, they would currently only be allowed to sign two players… If Bannan, Paterson and Famewo extend, they can’t sign any.”
Crann was then asked if the embargo would stand if a takeover was completed, to which he simply replied: “Yeah”.
Latest on Sheffield Wednesday takeover
Turki Alalshikh has been told to buy Sheffield Wednesday. However, the Saudi billionaire doing so looks unlikely, as it has been said he would like a team in the south of England.
Meanwhile, there is interest from America in buying the Owls, but again, a move looks difficult.
This comes as reports emerged this week that a Florida-based consortium submitted an offer to buy Sheffield Wednesday.
However, that offer, for an unknown amount, was turned down by Chansiri.
