Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham eyeing up son of ex-Man Utd prospect – in record transfer

Wrexham are one of several clubs interested in signing the son of a former Premier League star but the deal could cost the club a record transfer fee

Charlie Savage, who currently plays for Reading and is the son of ex-Wales international Robbie Savage, has caught the attention of several Championship clubs. Newly-promoted Wrexham, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth are all reportedly interested in the 22-year-old midfielder.

To lure Savage to the Racecourse Ground, the Red Dragons might have to smash their transfer record. The fee is expected to exceed the £2million that Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney paid for Reading striker Sam Smith during the January transfer window.

Savage was a key player for the Royals in League One last season, scoring seven goals and setting up 13 more across all competitions as they narrowly missed out on the play-off spots. According to the Mirror, Savage could be keen on a move to a higher division in an attempt to regain his place in Craig Bellamy’s Wales squad.

A product of Manchester United’s youth academy, Savage made a single first-team appearance for the Red Devils. He came off the bench late in a Champions League match against Young Boys in December 2021 before transferring to Reading in the summer of 2023.

Wrexham might have an advantage in the race for Savage’s signature, given that his father was born and raised in the area. Charlie has won two senior caps for Wales, debuting at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in October 2023. During a convincing 4-0 friendly win against Gibraltar, Charlie played the full match and bagged an assist.

His father Robbie, who earned 39 caps for Wales, enthused: “His pride in the red shirt of Wales speaks for itself because he was born in England and his mother was born in Scotland, so he could have played for either of them.

“He’s got a left foot like a wand and he’s an elegant player on the ball, but he needs to win more duels and Reading is a great place for him to work on that physical side of his game.
