Claim made on Norwich City making Ralph Hasenhuttl move after “he did an alright job at Southampton”

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Ralph Hasenhuttl could be a potential contender to take over at Norwich City following his dismissal from VfL Wolfsburg.

The bookies have installed the Austrian as a front-runner to become the next permanent manager at Carrow Road.

Jack Wilshere is currently in place as an interim option, but with the campaign now over the focus will be on finding a permanent successor to Johannes Hoff Thorup, who was sacked in April.

Hasenhuttl previously worked in English football as Southampton manager from 2018 to 2022, and spent just one season with Wolfsburg before being dismissed earlier this month.

When asked about the prospect of Hasenhuttl being appointed, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes expressed his scepticism at a move being made for the 57-year-old.

However, he believes that he would be a good appointment as manager given the work he did at Southampton.

“I can’t see Ralph Hasenhuttl being appointed,” Downes told Football League World.

“I think it’s just appeared because he’s just been sacked, so I think it’s unlikely that he’s now going to jump into another job, especially because our managerial pursuit would’ve been a little bit longer than that.

“Unless they wanted to scrap what they were doing before and go with him, I can’t see that being possible.

“I wouldn’t mind it though, he’s done a good job in the past.

“He did an alright job at Southampton, but obviously it didn’t end well in the end there.

“I like his style of play, but he’s not really done an awful lot since of note, so I don’t know.

“But I do think that this is not one to be thinking about at all.”

Hasenhuttl would be an exciting appointment for Norwich

Hasenhuttl proved himself as a very capable Premier League manager during his time at Southampton, where he kept them in the division despite trying circumstances.

Norwich would do well to appoint someone of his calibre as Thorup’s replacement, although it is unlikely a deal will progress.

While it hasn’t worked for him at Wolfsburg, his style of play would be welcomed by supporters, and could suit the players currently in the squad quite well.

However, scepticism over his appointment is warranted as it would be surprising if he dropped down to the Championship at this point in his career.
