‘Give him the captaincy!’ – Transfer plan for USMNT star Josh Sargent as Norwich are urged to ‘dangle all the carrots’ in front of Premier League-linked striker

Norwich have been told to make USMNT star Josh Sargent club captain and “dangle all the carrots” they can in a bid to fend off transfer interest.

  • Forward starring for the Canaries
  • Tied to a long-term contract
  • Big bid would be difficult to turn down

WHAT HAPPENED?

United States international Sargent, who arrived at Carrow Road in 2021, is about to complete another productive campaign in Norfolk. He has registered 15 goals and may yet match his personal best return of 16 from last season.

The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the most fearsome forwards in the Championship, but he has been unable to fire Norwich back into the Premier League. That situation is helping to keep exit talk ticking over.

DID YOU KNOW?

Sizeable bids may be tabled for Sargent this summer, which force the Canaries into a sale, but they are being urged to do all they can to keep a talismanic presence in his current surroundings.

WHAT IWAN ROBERTS SAID

Norwich legend Iwan Roberts has told the Pink Un: “I’d just tell Sargent I want to build a team around him. I don’t want him to go anywhere. I would emphasise his importance to the club. I might even give him the club captaincy – no disrespect to Kenny McLean. I’d just dangle all the carrots that I could in front of Josh Sargent.

“If an offer comes in that the club couldn’t turn down you’d have to be totally honest and say ‘we’ll always let you know but if it’s not good enough then we turn it down. If someone produces a bid that we think is acceptable we’ll have no option but to sell you’. I would sit down with the Sargent and try to emphasise that he’s the future, that you want to build a team around him, you don’t want him to go anywhere.”

WHAT NEXT FOR JOSH SARGENT?

Norwich have Sargent tied to a contract through to 2028, so are under no pressure to sell. Talk of interest from the Premier League and Bundesliga continues to build, though, with it possible that a man with 28 senior international caps to his name will soon be on the move.
