Norwich City chop down trees near Carrow Road and Canary Way

Trees chopped down by the city’s football club have left people living nearby agitated.

However people living next to the club are upset, after hearing the club’ has no intention to replace any of the felled trees.

Josh Worley, who lives behind the club and is also a Green Party councillor for Thorpe Hamlet, says he and others are “disappointed” by the club’s decision.

He said: “The club cut half the trees down and left these ridiculous two-to-three foot stumps up with builder’s tape around them.

“I followed up with the planning officer to see what was happening and they informed me the land used to belong to highways a while ago, but was sold to the club.

“I was also told there were no tree protection orders (TPOs) for them and they weren’t in a conservation area.

“It meant the club could essentially do whatever they liked without informing the council or asking for permission.”

Cllr Worley contacted the club about why they cut down the trees and received an email back a few days later.

In it Cllr Worley claims the club said the felling of the trees related to stopping birds nesting in them and that they were also affecting sightlines for their CCTV.

It added that during full bloom, in the summer, it was difficult to monitor fans at games.

Cllr Worley added: “Basically they’ve cut these trees down and have no plans to plant more anywhere.

“People here are really disappointed about what’s happened but there’s just nothing we can do.”

Norwich City FC was contacted for comment on the matter.
