Derby County reunion in League Two as former Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United winger completes move
The 33-year-old, who has represented both the blue and red sides of the Steel City as well as Middlesbrough, has ended a three-year association with Derby.
He joined the Rams back in 2022, helping the club seal a return to the Championship, but has now dropped two divisions to link up with MK Dons.
The League Two outfit recruited Warne in April and he has already made a statement of intent with his first summer signing, tying Mendez-Laing down to a three-year deal.
Sheffield Wednesday have dominated the headlines in more ways than one ahead of the summer, with a potential takeover mooted.
The much-maligned Dejphon Chansiri has owned Sheffield Wednesday for over a decade, but for years, fans have been fed up with the Malaysian businessman.
On numerous occasions, Chansiri has failed to pay the Wednesday staff, while his failure to back Danny Rohl in the transfer window is likely to result in the German’s exit.
Luckily, there is interest in acquiring the football club. We exclusively revealed that the Walton family were eyeing a takeover at Sheffield Wednesday, and there is also intrigue from Saudi Arabia.
The chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh, is also interested in owning a Championship club, including the Owls and Millwall. But the Yorkshire side’s chances of that happening have been dealt a huge blow.
Simon Jordan says Turki Alalshikh ‘likes’ Southampton
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan recommended Alalshikh to buy Sheffield Wednesday; however, he’s not interested in buying a club in the north of England and instead wants a southern football club.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan shut down links to Wednesday by claiming the 43-year-old ‘likes’ Southampton.
“They are interested because they told me. I told them and tried to talk them out of Millwall because I don’t think it’s a proper football club. But that’s a different discussion,” Jordan said.
“It is Millwall, and he likes Southampton. I suggested Sheffield Wednesday to him, but he doesn’t want Sheffield Wednesday; he doesn’t want a club in the north. He wants a club in the south, and Millwall and Southampton are two clubs he thinks are interesting to him.”
Southampton, who recently appointed Will Still as manager, are also in the market for a new owner as chairman Dragan Solak is giving indications that he may be open to selling his 80 per cent stake.
Sheffield Wednesday fans will fear the worst
With Werder Bremen willing to pay Danny Rohl’s release clause, and no sign of Chansiri selling up after rejecting a bid from a Florida-based consortium, supporters of Sheffield Wednesday will fear the worst this summer.
It will be extremely difficult to replace someone of the class of Rohl, while convincing them to work under Chansiri’s financial constraints.
Unfortunately, the current variables show Wednesday could move backwards as a football club, with an interesting summer on the horizon.
Chansiri won’t invest money into the playing squad, meaning the Owls will be relying on paying nominal fees or free transfers to sign players.
That is worrying when the likes of Birmingham will be spending big, as Sheffield Wednesday could get left behind and plummet down the Championship table.
