Journalist hits out at ongoing ‘disgrace’ at Sheffield Wednesday, there has been ‘no leadership’

Sheffield Wednesday’s current crisis has been branded as a ‘disgrace’ as five factors point towards warning signs at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday’s summer has been tumultuous so far, with the Owls’ preparations for the 2025/26 Championship season severely hampered.

The first team has been stripped apart, as Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba were sold for a fee far below their market value, while Michael Smith and Josh Windass have since departed on a free transfer.

Not only have the players been left in the dark regarding their future, but the supporters have been shoved to the side, with the lack of pre-season friendlies, as well as uncertainty with the state of Hillsborough Stadium.

In fact, there is a catalogue of issues that have seen Sheffield Wednesday’s current situation turn into an ‘unacceptable’ mess.

Akin Famewo confirms Sheffield Wednesday exit with emotional goodbye message ahead of Hull City move

A dark cloud continues to hang over Sheffield Wednesday as the Owls can’t escape the myriad of problems created by Dejphon Chansiri.

Unpaid player wages, failed takeover bids, no new signings, player exits, and uncertainty surrounding the future of Danny Rohl have all contributed to their downfall this summer.

The supporters have been put through a wave of problems, and for Sheffield Wednesday to see light at the end of the tunnel, Dejphon Chansiri needs to pack his bags and leave.

The term ‘leave’ has been heavily associated with the Owls throughout the summer, as they’ve witnessed several of their players exit Hillsborough after not being paid.

Wednesday fans were hurt by Djeidi Gassama joining Rangers and Josh Windass completing his move to Wrexham, with more heartache set to follow.

Akin Famewo says goodbye to Sheffield Wednesday ahead of Hull City transfer

Although Sheffield Wednesday were boosted by Callum Paterson returning to training this week, they also discovered that Akin Famewo was closing in on a move to Hull City.

Famewo was one of several who saw his contract expire at the end of last month, and although he was offered fresh terms by the club, the centre-back has chosen to officially leave Hillsborough after three years.

The 26-year-old made 73 appearances for the Owls and was part of the Wednesday side that earned promotion via the play-offs in 2023.

Now, with the defender about to embark on his next chapter, he’s posted an emotional goodbye message to his former club on Instagram.

“I want to say a massive thank you to the staff, players and supporters,” Famewo wrote. “I’m proud to have represented the club over the last 3 years and have loved every minute of it. I wish you all nothing but the best in the future, it’s what the club deserves.

“Thank you for your support over the years it has been outstanding. I leave with fondness and gratitude. Thank you owls.”

Famewo becomes the latest in a long list of summer exits from S6, leaving Sheffield Wednesday’s squad thin on the ground.

How many senior players Sheffield Wednesday have left

Sheffield Wednesday fans were angry this week after finding out their friendly against Mansfield on Saturday is being played behind closed doors.

Although the club are in dire straits, the fans still wanted to see their players in action, with youngsters now expected to shine at Sheffield Wednesday.

There will be an onus on those from the academy to step into the first team next season, as Wednesday only have nine senior players aged 21 and over training ahead of their clash against Mansfield.

They are: Liam Palmer, Dominic Iorfa, Max Lowe, Yan Valery, Nathaniel Chalobah, Svante Ingelsson, Olaf Kobacki, Jamal Lowe and Ike Ugbo.

Di’Shon Bernard remains at the club, but he is currently sidelined with an injury.

Dom Howson criticises ‘unacceptable’ Sheffield Wednesday situation

Sheffield Wednesday’s current situation under the stewardship of Dejphon Chansiri has seen the club attempt to survive day-to-day. Staff go about their business with the understandable insecurity of whether they will be paid.

The issues have brewed towards a hostile atmosphere in S6, with Chansiri being targeted as the person to blame.

Reflecting on the situation, journalist Dom Howson wrote on X about the litany of issues facing the club, including the suggestion that there is ‘no leadership from the top’.

Howson then went on and wrote: “What’s happening at Sheffield Wednesday is a disgrace and the fans deserve so much better. It’s totally unacceptable.”
