Highlights & Reaction from the (It’s not a) derby – Southampton v AFC Bournemouth
AFC Bournemouth made the short trip through the New Forest to face the Cherries closest geographical neighbours in the Football League, Southampton, on Saturday.
This season, the two sides seek very different ambitions, the hosts hoping to beat Derby County’s points haul and avoid becoming the worst top-tier side ever seen during the Premier League era, whilst the visitors are in the hunt for European competition for the first time in the club’s history.
The result was always a forgone conclusion, AFC Bournemouth just needed to turn up and be professional and the points would be theirs and that’s exactly how it turned out.
“Bournemouth moved above Chelsea into fifth place in the Premier League with 3-1 win over sorry Southampton in the south coast derby.”
Meanwhile, AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola told the Daily Echo that…
“…I think we are having good starts. I remember last games, Newcastle away, Everton the other day.
Man of the match against Southampton
The first half was as comfortable as it’s possible to be in the PL and had great chances to make it 3 or 4 before they scored. We got a bit complacent, and wasteful with the ball and let them play through us a bit in 2nd half and they deserved a goal back.
We upped the tempo again almost immediately after they scored, very good reaction.
Nice to have options off the bench again finally.
Bigger tests to come!
Cherries fans very loud throughout on the TV…”Champions League awaits for me!”
“The cross from Christie is outstanding, out of this world” 🤩
