WORRIED residents say a road closure for major gas works is putting schoolchildren at risk as drivers carry out dangerous manoeuvres.
Chris Stubbs, who lives in nearby Old Road, said ongoing works by Cadent have left children and families navigating a “hazardous” route to nearby White Hall Academy and Nursery.
Mr Stubbs said: “Vehicles are speeding, turning dangerously, parking on yellow lines, and even mounting the pavement right where children are crossing — and there’s no school crossing patrol in place. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”
Initially the roundabout end of London Road was blocked but the Old Road end remained open for access.
He says drivers often proceed the full length of the road only to turn around in unsafe conditions.
Mr Stubbs shared photos and videos of lorries reversing along the street and cars stopping metres from schoolchildren.
He said the road had since been fully closed on Monday with a worker stationed at the barrier to control access.
“Even this hasn’t solved it,” he said.
“Within five minutes, I saw people lying about living past the barrier, parking illegally and blocking traffic. The risk is still very real — and no children should be left to cross this road alone.”
Richard Bell, 70, a retired resident, said: “People are driving away in a hurry and with this unclear signage, and there being a park and school being in the locality, it certainly seems like a big issue. We need something to be done.”
Dave Wright,52, a refuse collector and resident of Old Road, added: “This is certainly a major safety concern for school goers, the cars come in, and there’s no one doing anything about it.”
A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: “The safety of the public and workers is our priority. Our inspectors have attended and are satisfied the closure is being manned and enforced appropriately. Any dangerous driving should be reported to police.”
A spokesman for Cadent said the work was to “futureproof” the gas network by replacing old iron pipes. “We worked closely with the council and Essex Highways to agree suitable traffic management and signage,” he said.
“Drivers ignoring the signage do so at great risk. We urge residents to report unlawful behaviour to Essex Police. Feedback can be given via 0800 151 2004.”
