Leicester City will not rush Jaime Vardy return, says Claude Puel - TNT Sports

Leicester City’s first transfer could reunite Marti Cifuentes with player he strongly defended

Leicester City are said to be in talks with free agent Asmir Begovic, as they seek to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks following the departures of Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen

Leicester City are reportedly in talks over a reunion between new manager Marti Cifuentes and his former goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

City, linked to the veteran Stoke and Bournemouth goalkeeper earlier in the summer, are now in discussions with the free agent, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After leaving QPR last summer, Begovic returned to Everton as a back-up goalkeeper, and is now a free agent again.

City need at least one senior goalkeeper this transfer window following the departures of Daniel Iversen and Danny Ward, who were released at the ends of their contracts.

Begovic would likely be coming in as experienced cover to Mads Hermansen and Jakub Stolarczyk, but there is still strong potential for the former to leave.

Jamie Vardy Leaving Leicester City: The End of a Fairytale

City had anticipated transfer interest in the Dane, who showed his Premier League-level ability before a groin injury in December last season.

If Hermansen does leave, and West Ham are credited with interest, then City would need another goalkeeper, either as first choice or as deputy to Stolarczyk, who has proven his own credentials when stepping in for Hermansen.

If wrapped up soon, 38-year-old Begovic would be City’s first signing of the window.

They are one of only three Championship sides yet to bring any players in, alongside Middlesbrough and crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.

Rogers presents the most expensive option of the three with Aston Villa said to be demanding a fee in the region of £80million for the 22-year-old’s signature. Perhaps for good reason, though. The England international has been exceptional for Villa since signing in February 2024 from Middlesbrough.

Jamie Vardy completes fairytale ending at Leicester City, now he must make the right decision for his next move

Boro came calling to sign Rogers in 2023 with the then 20-year-old not getting any game time at Manchester City. Despite showing immense promise, Rogers was not able to break his way into the first team at the Etihad Stadium. It is no wonder given the City team on show at the time – the side that won the infamous treble in the 2023/24 season.

Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Rogers and his talents, though, and City clearly believed he would come good as they received 25% of the fee Villa paid Boro for his services due to a sell-on clause inserted into his deal. Before coming up against Villa last season, Guardiola gave Rogers the ultimate seal of approval.

“It was a team that won the treble,” Guardiola explained when asked about Rogers in December 2025. “Sometimes it’s the right time to give the [player] a chance. Of course, everyone knows how good Morgan is.

“In that age, at the moment, we have the players we have that allowed us to create the most successful eight years in football history. In our club, comparing in this 35 or 40 days it’s not good.
