
Ipswich Town: Tommy Smith leaves Auckland to return to the UK
Former Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith has departed A-League side Auckland FC after one season to return to the United Kingdom.
The 35-year-old featured 25 times for the Black Knights, who sealed an historic Premiership title in their inaugural campaign.
Smith was vice-captain for Steve Corica’s side, who are based in New Zealand, but compete in the Australian top flight and were only founded over a year ago.
Tommy Smith last played in England with MK Dons. (Image: PA)He joined the Kiwi side from Macarthur FC in June 2024, but despite being contracted for another year, he has agreed to leave the club in order to allow him to spend more time with his young family in the UK.
“It’s been an incredible year in Auckland, and I was able to lift silverware. That’s something I’ll carry with me forever,” Smith said.
“The team, staff and fans made me feel so welcome returning back to Auckland. I’m truly grateful to have played a part in such a special first chapter for this club. It was a difficult decision to leave such a special city.
“From the first day of pre-season, the journey we shared has been unforgettable. There’s a real sense of pride in what we built together. The fans created an atmosphere and community that made it feel like home. They’ve truly reignited the passion for football in Auckland.”
The New Zealand international came through the youth ranks at Portman Road, where he went on to make over 250 appearances for the Blues. He left the club for MLS side Colorado Rapids in January 2018.
