Derby County, Norwich City, Coventry and Rangers plot move for Sheffield Wednesday star

Derby County and Coventry City target becomes available as a free agent

Derby County and Coventry City target Josh Windass has left Sheffield Wednesday, as announced by their official club website.

Derby County have been linked with the attacker this summer along with Coventry City, as per The Star, along with Wrexham, Rangers and Norwich City. DCFC are preparing for the start of the new Championship season.

Windass, 31, has been with the Owls since 2020 and is a key asset. He was their top scorer in the last campaign with 13 goals in the league.

In this latest update regarding his situation, the Owls have now confirmed that he has left Hillsborough now along with striker Michael Smith. He will now be weighing up his options in the game.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast recently, Windass said: “I’ve been there five years now which is obviously a long time but I’ve enjoyed it. I’m the top scorer now for the club this century which is a record I wanted to get… The lads were trying to get me it. I went a few games without a goal and I didn’t think I was going to get it. I scored from a yard out at Watford (in the final game of the season) and I was buzzing.”

He added: “I’ve got another year but we’ll see (what happens).”

Derby County could see Windass as someone to boost their attacking department. DCFC have been busy on the recruitment front over recent times.

The Hull-born man has been a great servant to Sheffield Wednesday over the last five years. He has fired 50 goals in 173 matches altogether.

Windass joined the South Yorkshire club on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent. He helped them gain promotion from League One under the guidance of Darren Moore.

He has had spells in the past at Huddersfield Town, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Accrington Stanley, Rangers and Wigan Athletic. He found the net on nine occasions in 55 matches for the latter before his current club swooped in.

What now for Derby County?

Derby County would need to see off competition from elsewhere if they secured Windass’ signature. DCFC face rival interest from teams including Coventry City, Wrexham and Norwich City, as well as Rangers.

He could be a shrewd addition if they landed him. Windass is experienced and has proved he can score goals in the second tier.

The Rams turned to John Eustace back in February and he left Blackburn Rovers to take over at Pride Park. He has since done an impressive job and has delved into the market this summer to sign Carlton Morris, Andi Weimann and Danny Batth.
