Hull City stance on Derby County and Stoke City target clarified by reporter
Hull City have ‘zero interest’ in selling John Egan amid links to Derby County and Stoke City, according to HullLive reporter Barry Cooper on X.
Hull City intend to keep hold of the defender this summer amid reported attention from elsewhere. HCAFC’s centre-back is wanted by Derby County, Stoke City and Wrexham, according to Football Insider.
Egan, 32, joined the Tigers last January and made 11 appearances in all competitions during the second-half of last season. He is under contract at the MKM Stadium until June 2026, with the option of a further 12 months on top of that.
In this latest update regarding his future in East Yorkshire, journalist Cooper has suggested on X that his current club have no plans to offload him anytime soon. They are preparing for the start of the new Championship campaign.
After signing for Hull City earlier this year, Egan told their official club website: “I’m delighted. I’d known about the interest for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen. Last night, I got a call and I made my way over this morning. The club has made some really good signings in January. It’s a really good squad, a very good manager; it just needs to drive up the league now.”
Hull City stance on John Egan
Hull City signed Egan last winter to boost their defensive department. HCAFC landed him to add more competition and depth to their options at the back.
He has turned out to be a shrewd addition for the Tigers and injects valuable experience into their squad. The Republic of Ireland international, who has made 36 caps for his country, helped them stay up in the second tier last term under Ruben Selles.
Egan made his name at Sheffield United during his spell there from 2018 to 2024. He played 223 games for the Blades and found the net on eight occasions.
He has also had spells at Sunderland, Gillingham and Brentford in the past. The Cork-born man then had a stint at Burnley before linking up with Hull City.
What now for John Egan at Hull City?
Hull City won’t want to lose Egan amid talk of attention from Derby County, Stoke City and Wrexham. HCAFC would miss his influence in the dressing room if he departed.
The Tigers are well stocked up with players in his position though. They also have Charlie Hughes, Alfie Jones, Semi Ajayi and Sean McLoughlin to pick from meaning one may have to leave over the coming weeks.
Sergej Jakirovic has been picked as their head coach this summer. The former Rijeka and Dynamo Zagreb was appointed as their replacement for Selles, who has since joined Sheffield United, and he left his role at Kayserispor to move to England for a new challenge.
