Sheffield Wednesday fans celebrate latest takeover update, but there's debate over one thing they 'don't need'

‘I don’t think…’ – Sheffield Wednesday decisions ‘smart’ but suggest no ‘grand overhaul’

Sheffield Wednesday’s summer retained list offered up no real shocks, but is an indicator of their immediate future amid manager speculation.

The Owls are in an odd situation at present given the question marks over Danny Röhl’s future at the club, with lots of uncertainty about the way forward both on and off the field of play. The retained list at least drew a line under the situation of the bulk of the playing staff, with only three lots of contract discussions to be had – with Barry Bannan, Callum Paterson and Akin Famewo.

Among the decisions made were options that were taken up on Josh Windass, Michael Smith and Anthony Musaba, and while in many ways it was probably a no-brainer given the value that the trio offer, our man, Alex Miller, thinks it suggests that there will be no ‘grand overhaul’ over how the Owls will be playing next season.

Sheffield Wednesday’s retained list review

Speaking on this week’s episode he said, “If there was going to be a grand overhaul in how Wednesday were going to do things you’d maybe look at it and think there’s an opportunity to change things around, but I don’t think Wednesday are in that position and I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“I also think it’d be impossible while the speculation over the future of the manager is hanging over the club. So yeah, I think it’s very sensible to keep all three of them on.”

Sky Sports pundit has suggested an outrageous Sheffield Wednesday replacement for Danny Rohl

Sheffield Wednesday are riddled with uncertainty ahead of the summer transfer window, with manager Danny Rohl being one variable causing that feeling.

Rohl has become one of the EFL’s leading managerial lights since moving to Hillsborough in October 2023. The German miraculously kept Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship in 2023/24 before guiding the Owls to a 12th-place finish in 2024/25.

Despite working under the financial constraints applied by Dejphon Chansiri, the 36-year-old has made some fantastic progress on the pitch, which has undoubtedly been noticed by other clubs.

Rohl was on Southampton’s managerial shortlist, but they’re now set to appoint Will Still, while Leicester looked at the German to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy.

We exclusively revealed that Rohl’s preferred destination is a return to Germany. However, since it emerged he’s taking his time to decide his future, Rohl has angered Wednesday fans, who will be wondering when they can get a replacement in.

Lee Hendrie wants Steven Gerrard to replace Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday

The saga involving the German tactician could run into the transfer window. That is far from ideal for the Yorkshire outfit, who would like to plan ahead of the summer, especially with talks of a takeover involving Sheffield Wednesday.

It appears they’re going to be waiting a while for their current manager to exit as Wednesday are refusing to sack Rohl, and no one has emerged as a strong candidate to replace him.

Weirdly, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie thinks former Rangers, Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard would be a suitable replacement for Rohl, despite failing in almost every job he’s been in.

“I’d love to see Steven Gerrard back in the English game. Obviously, it didn’t really work for him when he went to Villa, which was a disappointment on every level,” Hendrie told Football League World.

“But he has been away, he’s been in Saudi, trying something different. It was absolutely incredible what he did at Rangers, and sometimes you need to step away from the English game to come back.

“I’m sure he’ll have learned a lot in that time. So, I think it’d be great to see. We’ve got Frank Lampard at Coventry, we’ve got Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, all learning their trade still.

“But I personally think it’d be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday if that was to happen.”

Gerrard would be an awful appointment for Sheffield Wednesday

Unlike Frank Lampard, who has done a stellar job at Coventry City and at his previous clubs, Gerrard has failed to show any real managerial credentials.

Gerrard’s trophy ratio at Rangers was one from a possible nine, in a league where only Celtic are their main rivals for domestic silverware.

During his time at Aston Villa, the Liverpool legend had them battling against relegation before Unai Emery masterminded a European finish, with Villa since returning to the Champions League.

In January 2025, Gerrard left Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent after failing to get his side into the title race, finishing a staggering 48 points behind champions Al-Hilal.

Unfortunately, the 44-year-old has failed to improve a team in every job he’s been in, explaining why Hendrie’s suggestion is outrageous.
