Wrexham given encouragement over signing £2m ‘leader’ as Championship club struggle to agree new contract

Wrexham are in the market for midfield additions this summer and may now have the encouragement to strike.

Wrexham fans have a first summer signing to savour after Phil Parkinson secured a new striker on Monday.

Ryan Hardie has joined Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle, completing a £700,000 move to the STōK Cae Ras.

The excitement of the first summer signing is strong, but many will be wondering who Wrexham will move to sign next.

Midfielders have been heavily linked, with Tom Cairney considering an offer to join Wrexham from Fulham.

Fellow left-footer Lewis O’Brien is on Wrexham’s wish list, but Parkinson could also target a right-footed battler in his engine room.

The Wrexham Insider noted earlier in June that Wrexham have shown an interest in Lewis Travis of Blackburn Rovers.

Travis is out of contract in 2026, and Wrexham are looking to pounce for the Rovers captain.

Travis hasn’t ruled out staying at Blackburn, but Valerian Ismael’s side appear to be struggling on that front.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims Blackburn are prepared to give Travis a three-year deal to stay at Ewood Park.

However, Travis is believed to be seeking ‘big money’ – and is waiting on Wrexham to make a firm move for his signature.

The report adds that Wrexham would be interested in striking a £2million deal for Travis.

Birmingham City are also interested in signing Travis, with growing interest seemingly leaving Blackburn concerned about losing their captain.

Travis has been on the Blackburn books since being let go by Liverpool back in 2014.

Outside of a 2024 loan spell with Ipswich Town, Travis has spent all of the last 11 years at Ewood Park.

This summer may be the perfect time for Travis to try something new – and the time may also be right for Wrexham to ramp up a move.

Travis may not have closed the door on staying at Blackburn, but the thought of a big move has seemingly crossed his mind.

Blackburn have yet to hit the numbers Travis is seeking and that leaves the door open for Wrexham to pounce.

Forget the big names, Wrexham will continue to chase signings who can fit into this determined and united dressing room.

Hardie fits the bill and so does Travis, a player whose character has been praised as much as his ability.

Travis has been praised as a leader, with his former managers falling in love with his determination and work rate.

Wrexham would be wise to ramp up a move for Travis while Blackburn struggle to come to terms on a deal.

Maybe Crystal Palace sell Adam Wharton this summer and Blackburn come into money through a sell-on clause, which could allow them to increase an offer for Travis.

Wrexham may not fancy taking that chance, and having wrapped up the deal for Hardie, Travis could become one of Parkinson’s next top priorities.
