Paul Mullin during Wrexham v Los Angeles Galaxy II - Pre-Season Friendly

Humphrey Ker pens heartfelt goodbye to Paul Mullin after Wrexham exit is confirmed

The news has been confirmed: Paul Mullin is leaving Wrexham, joining Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2025/26 season in League One.

It’s the news that many Wrexham fans have been predicting for some time, and the news that few wanted to see become reality.

Paul Mullin is going to spend the next season on loan with Wigan Athletic in a bid to get his career back on track, after what was a very tough 2024/25 season for the 30-year-old at Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson lost faith in Mullin. He went on to play just 26 times in League One last season, scoring three goals. Speaking recently, Mullin said he didn’t know why Parkinson dropped him at Wrexham.

But it’s pastures new for the Dragons goal machine and there’s already been a wave of messages wishing him well in this next chapter of his career.

For several weeks there had been reports that Wigan Athletic wanted to sign Mullin from Wrexham. But there was confusion over the structure of the deal with multiple reports that Wrexham would let Mullin leave the club for free, despite him having another two years left to run on his contract.

But it’s a loan move, and what next summer might hold for Mullin remains to be seen: impress at Wigan and he could have another shot at Wrexham, but fail to impress and then the Dragons surely look to move him on permanently.

Either way, Wrexham eyes will be on Mullin next season. And posting a message to the striker, Wrexham’s community director Humphrey Ker posted a picture of Mullin on his Instagram story, with the caption: “Go well, you Prince amongst men.”

Along with many fans, Wrexham’s co-owner Ryan Reynolds has also sent a farewell message to Mullin. The actor posted online: “I can’t imagine seeing Mulls on loan and in another kit. We wouldn’t be where we are without his heart, skill and work ethic. We love you, Paul Mullin.”

Long-term Wrexham teammate James McClean also sent a message to Mullin. He posted: “All the best mate, rip it up.” And of course, Mullin sent his message to Wrexham fans after sealing his temporary exit. He said: “All the best this season! Keep the train rolling.”

Both Wigan Athletic and Wrexham’s fixtures for the 2025/26 season are set to be released on Thursday 26th June.
