Patrick Agyemang deserves more credit as a striker, says former LA Galaxy and USA forward Landon Donovan.
Derby County are said to be “closing in” on a $7m transfer deal for USA man Agyemang.
The Charlotte FC forward has impressed on the international stage since earning his first call-up to the national team in January.
He has scored eight goals and has registered two assists for Charlotte and has five goals in nine games for the international team
The 6ft 4in striker is regarded as hot property across the Atlantic and is currently with Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the Gold Cup where he again showed his prowess in front of goal as he scored the winner in a group game against Haiti.
And Donovan believes Agyemang does not get the credit he deserves.
“I mean, he gets so much c**p from people,” he said. “And people don’t understand the sport, and they don’t understand that you can be effective without being this clean, clinical (player)… If he was clean and clinical he would be playing at Barcelona.
“Give the guy some credit. He’s 24, he’s making a great career for himself.
“In his first nine US international team appearances, he’s scored five goals. That means he’s tied with a guy who was pretty damn good, Jozy Altidore, for the sixth fewest games needed to score five goals.
“He doesn’t need to be a world beater, but he’s been really effective.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has already said Agyemang has given the green light to a move to Derby.
